John Lewis was born to Alabama sharecroppers in 1940. As a kid he practiced preaching to the chickens on the family farm.
At 21 he was one of the original Freedom Riders, riding buses through the segregated South. He got beaten and arrested and kept getting back on. At 23 he was the youngest speaker at the March on Washington. At 25 he led marchers across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, and Alabama state troopers fractured his skull. Bloody Sunday helped get the Voting Rights Act passed that summer.
He spent 33 years in Congress fighting for voting rights. His line was "get in good trouble, necessary trouble."
Today, Election Day 2026, there's a bus in Tampa with his face on it that says "Make Good Trouble—Vote!"
