Trigger warning: Suicide
I find it fascinating how performative people become on social media when news breaks that someone has taken their own life. Suddenly, timelines are flooded with “check in on your people” quotes.
But the reality? Most of us are too busy focused on our own lives, or on people we prioritise more. And sometimes, that isn’t the person who’s struggling.
Ask yourself honestly: when someone reaches out to you, do you actually make time?
Over the past few months, I’ve reached out to people via texts, calls, even trying to meet, and got silence. Those people had no idea why I was reaching out. I could have been at my lowest, just needing someone to listen, but they chose not to show up.
Do you think those same people wouldn’t make time for someone they value more? Partners, colleagues, people they benefit from?
And if I had died, would those same people be online writing paragraphs about how kind, and supportive I was?
That’s the part that doesn’t sit right with me.
Humans can be hypocritical. When it comes to suicide and mental health, people often focus more on looking like "good" people, than actually being "good" people.
Yes, life gets busy. We all have our own struggles. But sometimes, simply making time for someone who reaches out, or checking in on the “strong” friend who seems off, can genuinely save a life.
Not everyone will open up. But if someone is trying to, at least meet them halfway.
