“So I stood up there before four thousand people and I said integration would come for the waifus. I said it just like that. Your waifus. I said the schoolgirl with the toast in her mouth, running late, the, uh, magical girl with the ribbon and the wand, they would not be safe in a mixed Alabama. I don't know what half of it meant. I said "senpai" twice and I believe the second time I said it wrong.
They cheered, son. Lord help me, they cheered.”
"You want to know what I think about, nights? It ain’t the schoolhouse door. Everybody thinks it’s the schoolhouse door. It’s Gadsden, 1962.
Billy Ray Pruitt was running my campaign then. Smart man but as mean as, as a snake in a churn. He come to me in the motel and he says, “George, the polling’s soft in the Black Belt. Folks want to see strength.” I said I’d give ’em a speech. He said, “No sir. They seen speeches.” And he opened his briefcase and there wasn’t nothing in it but a pamphlet from a Japanese fella and a headband.
I trained eleven weeks. Nobody tells you how much screaming it takes. By the end of it, Lurleen thought, uh, I’d took up Pentecostalism.
So there’s this boy on the courthouse steps. Nineteen, maybe. Holding a sign said WE SHALL OVERCOME, real neat lettering, you could tell his mama helped him. And Billy Ray’s behind the press truck nodding at me. And I clenched my fists, and my hair went up gold, son, gold, standing straight up like a Methodist at a revival, and there was a sound like the whole of Etowah County had just about tore itself in half.
The boy didn’t run. That’s what I can’t get past. He just looked at me. He wasn't scared so much as, as disappointed. Like he’d expected to go toe to to with a man and run into a cartoon.
I won that primary by nine points."
[EIGHT SECONDS OF SILENCE]
"Billy Ray died in ‘81. Heart. I didn’ go. I went instead to that boy’s church, and I sat in the back, and when they let me, I said I was sorry. He was a deacon by then. Grey at the temples. He shook my hand and said, “Governor, you can power down now.” And, and, I cried like I ain’t cried since Lurleen passed.
I still got the headband. I don’t know why. A man keeps the evidence, I suppose. So he can’t tell himself it was somebody else."
[FOUR SECONDS OF SILENCE]
"It wasn’t. It was me. Every gotdang hair of it."

It should be pretty eye opening that if you just pick a random place in this country and put a plane into a nose dive you’ll end up surrounded by Guatemalan wookies scurrying around going “gleeba glooba beeba booba”, right next to a dilapidated strip mall full of businesses that will serve you fresh Chalupas while they repair your Samsung.
Like seriously what the hell is going on here.
