@Vortexa in my mind is the best in tracking dark flows - doing hard work of tanker by tanker tracking, following the path of the true bbl vs “X minus Y” approach. Note their numbers were consistently higher than others’, but somehow other voices got more weight in press.
Every cargo has a journey. Understanding the recovery in Middle East oil exports (Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Kuwait, UAE, Qatar, Bahrain and Oman, excluding Iran) means following each barrel until it leaves the region. @Vortexa’s broader measure shows a substantial rebound for crude and refined products combined, but September's seven-day average has generally remained below 20 million barrels per day, against a pre-war baseline of 23.6 million. September averaged 17.8 million barrels per day, around 75% of pre-war levels. This measure combines oil moving through Hormuz with terminal loadings in the Gulf of Oman and Saudi Red Sea. It includes crude, condensate and refined products, excluding Iranian-origin cargoes, with the same scope applied to the pre-war comparison. This is a broader measure than crude-only exports, and the distinction matters when discussing a return to pre-war levels. Behind those numbers is the work of following cargoes through dark transits, shuttle voyages and ship-to-ship transfers. A barrel changing tankers is still the same barrel. Connecting those movements is essential to understanding how much supply is actually moving through the system. The chart shows strong individual days, but also repeated setbacks. The seven-day average remains below the pre-war baseline despite those peaks. At Vortexa, we are watching both the volume of the recovery and its durability. For anyone assessing supply availability and maritime risk, the ability to sustain flows over successive weeks matters far more than a single record day. Pre-war baseline: March 2025–February 2026. Latest seven days provisional. #OOTT

Most tankers now cross Hormuz with AIS switched off. Vortexa tracked 8.1mbd through the Strait from June to mid-September, rising to 9.3mbd in September, dark transits included and confirmed cargo by cargo. Miss them and you miss the competing cargo. vortexa.com/demo

US strikes on Iranian tankers have moved from listings to laden export cargoes — a different kind of pressure, and it's already reshaping which high-risk barrels still move. Crude on the water just fell faster than it did when the Middle East war started - 175mb gone in 4 weeks, onshore stocks down another 81mb. Most of the market will miss this in the summer lull. Our real-time cargo tracking won't. Vortexa's Chief Economist David Wech breaks down the shortfall building beneath the surface: vortexa.com/resources/report…

The crude inventory picture is shifting fast. Builds at sea since H2 2025 have now been fully reversed. Onshore stocks outside China fell 49mb in just four weeks. And from April, floating roof stock draws are expected to average roughly 5mbd. But China is the outlier. Onshore crude inventories there rose 1.6% over the past four weeks, even as imports dropped 3.05mbd. That buffer will not last indefinitely. The import gap points to draws ahead to maintain refinery runs. Our April crude monthly report breaks down the full inventory picture alongside exports, imports, high-risk barrels, arb flows and freight. The net crude supply loss from the Strait of Hormuz blockade stands at 9mbd. Despite a supply surge from the Atlantic Basin, replacement barrels remain tight. In our latest crude monthly report, Vortexa’s analysts break down exactly what has shifted: → US Gulf Coast crude exports hit record highs, fuelled by SPR releases → Pipeline rerouting via Yanbu, Fujairah and Ceyhan adds 3.6mbd → Global imports down approximately 10mbd, with Asian buyers hardest hit → Onshore inventories outside China fell 49mb in four weeks → Atlantic Basin to Asia flows cross approximately 7mbd, but cover only 30% of the MEG loss Crude at sea has fallen back to seasonal norms. Onshore stock draws are accelerating. The question now is whether the remaining buffer can hold. Download the full report: ow.ly/EIBv50YSvrN
