🔴The issuance and confirmation of death sentences against three women have raised concerns over the broader use of the death penalty against defendants in political and national security cases.
🔸Mahboubeh Shabani was sentenced to death for providing aid to injured protesters and transporting them to safety, among other acts cited against her. Mojdeh Hashemi Bazargani, whose death sentence has been upheld by the Supreme Court, reported being tortured, subjected to coerced confessions, and denied access to a lawyer of her choosing. Souda Ebrahimi Shamsabadi was also sentenced to death on charges that include media activities and sending images to Persian-language media outlets outside Iran.
🔸All three women are at risk of execution.

At least 70 people were executed in Iran in September 2026, bringing the total recorded by Iran Human Rights in the first nine months of the year to at least 604.
In September, 34 people were executed under qisas sentences for murder and 31 for drug-related offences. Eleven of those executed were Baluch; ten faced drug-related charges. Official sources announced only 10 of the 70 executions. IHRNGO verified the other 60 through two independent sources.

🔴For the first time in nearly two years, states from across the world have come together at the UN Human Rights Council to condemn the Islamic Republic of Iran’s escalating use of the death penalty.
🔸In a joint statement delivered by Liechtenstein, 45 states sounded the alarm over the sharp rise in executions and death sentences in Iran—particularly against protesters and those exercising their fundamental rights.
🔸The statement comes amid an alarming escalation in the use of capital punishment following the January 2026 protests. At least 31 protesters have been executed, while dozens more have reportedly been sentenced to death or remain at imminent risk of execution.
The statement marks the first cross-regional joint statement on Iran since September 2024, renewing collective international scrutiny of Iran’s use of the death penalty.
🔸As executions continue at an alarming rate, sustained international attention matters.

Today Saudi authorities executed another Nigerian woman on drug-related charges, the third of 2026 and the ninth over the last two years.
Saudi Arabia’s use of the death penalty consistently disadvantages women, particularly migrant domestic workers.

46 States Call for an Immediate Halt to Executions in Iran
A joint statement delivered by Liechtenstein at the 63rd session of the UN Human Rights Council on 30 September 2026 strongly condemned Iran’s continued and escalating use of the death penalty. The published document lists 46 supporting states.
The statement notes that at least 31 protesters have been executed following the January crackdown and warns that dozens more, including women and children, face imminent execution. Citing UN experts’ findings, it highlights the use of capital punishment to spread fear, silence dissent and deter peaceful expression and assembly.
The supporting states also expressed concern over reports of closed hearings, denial of due process, torture and ill-treatment, enforced disappearances and coerced confessions. They urged Iran to immediately halt its use of the death penalty.
Mai Sato, the UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in Iran, welcomed the statement, stressing that a moratorium on executions pending abolition is more urgently needed than ever.

Tehran and Alborz; death sentences upheld, lives at risk
These five protesters face upheld death sentences in Evin, Ghezelhesar and Greater Tehran prisons. They are among nine people with this recorded status in the Tehran and Alborz section of IHRNGO’s report.
Remember their names: Maryam Hodavand-Seiri, Mohammadreza Majidi Asl, Ali Kamali, Ahad Shokouhian, Ali Asghar Peyghambari.
Maryam Hodavand-Seiri is listed as 42 and Ali Asghar Peyghambari as 26. Peyghambari’s lawyer, Payam Derafshan, said his client’s alleged act was attending a protest. His defence team has sought a stay of execution.
These 5 people are named in IHRNGO’s report on 100 people at risk of execution in connection with Iran’s January 2026 protests. The recorded statuses follow the report published on 14 September 2026.
Mohammadreza Majidi Asl previously appeared in IHRNGO’s April reporting alongside Bita Hemati, Behrouz Zamaninejad and Kourosh Zamaninejad. The September report records his appeal rejection on 12 September; his status differs from those three, whose sentences were overturned.
The next post introduces four more people with upheld sentences in the same regional section.
Entry sources in the report: IHRNGO; HRANA; Lawyer. Each card identifies its source.
You can help by sharing their names with the source and exact sentence status, and calling for a halt to executions.

🔴In a joint report published today, the Abdorrahman Boroumand Center and Human Rights Watch condemned the ongoing unlawful execution campaign against protesters and political dissidents in Iran and called for global action to end the Islamic Republic’s relentless assault on the right to life.
🔸At least 29 individuals have been executed in connection with the December 2025 - January 2026 protests within the past five months, based on ABC and HRW’s human rights monitoring. Scores more remain at imminent risk. The organizations documented systemic due process violations, including denial of access to independent legal counsel, torture and ill-treatment to extract forced “confessions,” and politically-motivated convictions by Iran’s judiciary..
🔸These abuses are part of a broader weaponization of Iran’s legal framework to punish protesters and suppress dissent. Systematically vilifying protesters as “rioters” and “terrorists,” the Islamic Republic has continued to expand the scope of offenses punishable by death, providing authorities with broader legal tools to prosecute and execute those who challenge the state.
