In July 2024 a Black mother of two called 911 because she thought a prowler was outside her Illinois home. Two deputies came inside, joked with her about a pot of “hot steaming water” on her stove, and seconds later one of them drew his gun and told her: “I swear to God I’ll shoot you right in your face.” Deputy Sean Grayson then shot Sonya Massey, 36, in the face in her own kitchen. When his partner said he’d go get the medical kit, Grayson told him she was done and called it “a head shot.” She had picked up the pot, set it down and ducked behind the counter, and then appeared to lift it again.
