Fewer than 1 in 10 countries have fully transitioned from institutional care to community-based #MentalHealth care. Most countries are still working towards a future where care is delivered closer to home, with dignity and social inclusion at its core. A new WHO guide provides practical support for countries working to make this shift bit.ly/4yJjvBc #WorldMentalHealthDay

Jordan is taking a key step toward shaping the health workforce it needs today and in the future with the launch of its national initiative to develop the National Human Resources for Health Charter. At the launch event, Dr Adham Ismail, Officer-in-Charge for the @WHO Eastern Mediterranean Region, highlighted that the Charter can unite key stakeholders around a shared national vision. Emphasizing the need to turn commitments into action, Dr Ismail said: “Signatures are the easy part. What follows is harder: budget allocations, curriculum reform, posts created in the governorates that need them most, and opportunities that encourage young Jordanian professionals to build their careers at home.” “Every ambition we have for health ultimately comes down to people.” This country-led effort reflects the ambition of @WHOEMRO's regional flagship initiative to strengthen and invest in a resilient health workforce. WHO is supporting Member States to lead and shape solutions that ensure health workers are equipped, supported and available where they are needed most. As Jordan develops its new National Health Strategy, investing in the health workforce means investing in better care, stronger health systems and a healthier future for all. @mohgovjordan | @WHOJordan | @UnitedNationsjo @SheriR_Anderson

@mohgovjordan | @WHOJordan | @UnitedNationsJO | @SheriR_Anderson

A day of healing, laughter and hope. ❤️ For children evacuated from Gaza, moments of play, creativity and care can help restore a sense of childhood while they receive lifesaving treatment. @WHO is grateful for His Majesty King Abdullah II's Jordan Medical Corridor initiative and to the Government of Jordan for its leadership and unwavering commitment to providing hope, healing and lifesaving care to children and their families. We also thank Canada, Italy, the Netherlands and Switzerland for their generous support of these efforts, as well as all partners contributing to the care and recovery of children and their families. These partnerships are making lifesaving medical evacuations and holistic care possible for children from Gaza. Together, we are helping children heal, physically and emotionally, while bringing hope to families in their most difficult moments. What a blessing to see the smiles and fun on the faces of Gaza children. They are currently in #Jordan for medical treatment, thanks to the initiative by HM King Abdullah II, with generous support from 🇨🇦 🇦🇺 🇨🇭 🇳🇱 🇮🇹 🇬🇧 and facilitation by @WHOJordan and the @ForeignMinistry. It was an honor to join HRH Princess Muna and HRH Princess Zein in this visit. Huge thanks to the Children’s Museum in Amman for hosting the event. What a delightful place - complete with a supermarket replica! Let’s keep the initiative going. There are so many more children in Gaza that need this support. The entire @UN is proud to be a part of this effort to give young people a healthy future. @RHCJO @CanEmbJordan @AusAmbJO @SwissMFA @UKinJordan @ItalyinJordan @NLinJordan

The insecurity and escalating violence in El Obeid, North Kordofan, #Sudan, are having a severe impact on people’s access for humanitarian aid and to life-saving services. This increases the risk of disease outbreaks and malnutrition, especially for women and children. @WHO has prepositioned essential medical supplies for trauma and injury care, communicable disease prevention and response, reproductive, maternal and child health, and nutrition, enough to treat over 25,500 people. But the needs are large and growing. WHO calls for the immediate restoration of humanitarian corridors to ensure the safe and sustained delivery of health and humanitarian assistance. We also call for respect for the sanctity of health and the protection of health workers and patients.

Today is #SickleCell Awareness Day 🩸 40% more people are living with sickle cell disease today than in 2000. It is a growing health challenge, affecting around 7.7 million people in the world today. This means more health workers – incl. maternity providers - need to know how to manage the disease. WHO consolidated guidelines for the management of common childhood illness: management of sickle-cell disease in children and adolescents bit.ly/4elKVp6

At #WHA79, I was pleased to join a timely and forward-looking discussion on health care financing for universal health coverage #UHC. I would like to thank Burkina Faso, Jordan, Syrian Arab Republic and Türkiye and the @OIC_OCI for bringing together partners to tackle one of the defining health challenges of our time. At a moment of growing financial pressure on health systems, these conversations are more important than ever to help identify sustainable, locally driven solutions that protect access to care and strengthen resilience for the future. Traditional and innovative financing mechanisms, including Awqaf, Zakat, Sukuk and partnerships with development banks and the private sector, can help complement public financing and accelerate progress towards #UHC. The priority now is moving from discussion to implementation: strengthening governance, building evidence, aligning these mechanisms with national health financing strategies, and advancing practical country-level action that delivers equitable impact for communities across the @WHOEMRO Region and beyond. @WHOJordan | @mohgovjordan | @JordanUNGeneva | @WHOSyria | @syrianmofaex | @SyriatoUN | @SyrMOfH | @TC_BMCenevreDT | @WHO_Turkiye | @WHOAFRO | @WHO_Europe

As a paediatrician and a mother, I have seen firsthand the profound difference nurses and midwives make in the lives of children, families and communities. As we mark International Nurses Day and International Day of the Midwife, we reaffirm a simple truth: there can be no resilient health system without them. Across the Eastern Mediterranean Region, nurses and midwives continue to serve communities with courage, compassion and unwavering commitment, whether in hospitals, clinics and communities, or on the frontlines of emergencies and conflicts. This is why investing in a resilient health workforce is one of @WHOEMRO’s flagship initiatives. We must do more to invest in, empower and protect nurses and midwives, while creating pathways for the next generation of health leaders. Honoured to join colleagues, young professionals and partners from across the Region for the webinar marking #IND2026 and #IDM2026. I deeply appreciated the inspiring message from HRH Princess Muna Al-Hussein of Jordan, @WHO Patron of Nursing and Midwifery, whose leadership continues to champion the nursing and midwifery workforce. Together, we must ensure nurses and midwives are supported, valued and equipped to shape the future of health for all.

Events like #hantavirus serve as a reminder that investing in core capacities under the International Health Regulations is our collective foundation for global health security. These legally binding rules set out exactly what is required of every Member State: 1️⃣ Surveillance systems capable of rapidly detecting and assessing unusual health events, including at points of entry. 2️⃣ Prepared and resilient points of entry systems capable of detecting, assessing and responding to public health risks while maintaining safe international travel and trade. 3️⃣ Strong national IHR focal point mechanisms to ensure timely reporting of any unusual or unexpected public health events to WHO. 4️⃣ Response capacities capable of rapidly implementing public health measures, including laboratory testing, case isolation, contact tracing, infection prevention and control, and coordinated multisectoral action. 5️⃣ Risk Communication, Community Engagement and Infodemic Management capacities to ensure trusted information reaches people quickly, misinformation is addressed, and protective behaviours adopted as needed. No suspected or confirmed cases have been reported in countries of the Eastern Mediterranean Region. @WHO assesses the global risk as low and advises against the application of any travel or trade restrictions based on the current information available.

Deeply concerned by attacks on health care in #Iran, including incidents affecting hospitals, health workers and critical facilities such as the 105-year-old Pasteur Institute of Iran, a cornerstone of scientific research and a @WHO collaborating centre. Other health facilities have also been impacted, including the Delaram Sina Psychiatric Hospital, while damage to the Tofigh Daru pharmaceutical facility is disrupting the production of essential medicines. This is not only damage to infrastructure. It is a loss to health systems, scientific capacity and continuity of care. Health care must be protected at all times, in line with international humanitarian law. #NotaTarget For more on the evolving situation and WHO’s response, see our latest situation report: 🔗 emro.who.int/images/stories/…
