This is Wally Sr's portrait for CART (2002), which is Indycar nowadays. We'll save the Indycar and Champ Car/CART merger deep dive for another time, but suffice to say it is Indycar. Wally was the chief Steward for the series from 1981-2000, and again from 2001-2004 before calling time on his legendary career.

You can call me a historian or you can call me an independent journalist. There's a large group of folks on social media who would (and have) choose some more..... colorful labels 😂. Whatever you would prefer, I actually don't know or remember everything, and this is one of those. Throwback to @WPD500, Doc Bundy, and Sarel van der Merwe wheeling a Rick Hendrick owned Corvette GTP at Daytona in 1986. Today, election day, is a very depressing day by it's very nature, and the civil war that was created this morning amongst race fans due to the Hocevar news hasn't helped. So, for the rest of the day, I am going to blitz you all with several walks down memory lane. Let's come together and celebrate our (motorsports industry's) past folks 🫶

1972 Indy. One of my favorite looking cars. Sr said it was a handful lol. 3 out of 4 of his pit stops at Indy, car caught fire and he had to jump out. But he got back in each time they put fire out after fueling. Lola chassis.

Just based on the full-face helmet I think it's the 1970 Hoosier Hundred. That's the only dirt race he ran that year and based on other photos I have of him he didn't make the change from open-face until part way through the '70 season. That's my best guess. ;-)
