Caleb Smith’s 24-yd FG w 1:21 left, sandwiched between two ints of Creekside in the last 2 minutes, gave @BTHS_Football a 10-9 victory at rival @KNNCHS. Creekside missed an extra pt in the 3rd qtr and Smith misfired on a 29-yder before drilling the winner after a Loren Worth int.

NEWS: Former UNC star guard Seth Trimble has committed to Louisville, he tells ESPN, giving the Cardinals another marquee piece for a team projected among the best in the sport. Trimble entered the portal this spring and the Colorado district court ruling on the Class of 2022 opened the door for his eligibility.

Some personal news on the cusp of a new football season: After 22 years on the sidelines for Tar Heel football (and one of those in the booth during Covid-19) and 262 games from Boston to Miami to San Diego and of course the incomparable Kenan Stadium, it’s time a change—the bucket list, travel with The Missus and the sweetest baby granddaughter you ever saw. I’ll still pop up on Goheels and Born & Bred this season and have a centennial edition of my “Football in a Forest” book to knock out in 2027. But for the moment, best wishes to Jones and the crew, thanks for the memories and I’ll have you guys in my AirPods on the back nine.

According to the National Golf Foundation, while the U.S. has a net reduction of more than 2,000 daily fee & private golf courses over the last 20 years, municipally owned & operated golf courses increased by 7% to nearly 3,000 at over 2,600 facilities, the most on record.
