Alberta Renewal has finished a plain-language review of what Danielle Smith is about to do to Alberta’s oil royalties. In November she wants to cut the share Albertans get paid for their own oil. She is calling that “skin in the game.” She says it will help fill a new pipeline. We went through the whole deal. The carbon charges she accepted from Ottawa. The pipeline that taxpayers, not private investors, are on the hook for. The money British Columbia would collect on Alberta oil. And this royalty cut, which makes those other pieces cheaper for everyone except the people who own the resource. We call that stack Equalization 2.0. Same money leaving Alberta.
