Pope Leo XIV negotiated a temporary humanitarian ceasefire and aid corridor for the occupied Ukrainian city of Oleshky in the Kherson region.
Key Details of the Agreement.
Phone Diplomacy: Pope Leo XIV spoke by phone from Rome's Gemelli Hospital with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to push for the truce.
Ceasefire Date: The temporary halt in military action is scheduled to take effect on October 29, 2026.
Humanitarian Aid: The accord sets up a safe corridor to deliver food and medical supplies to civilians suffering from a severe food crisis.
Evacuation: The agreement provides a designated safe passageway for the voluntary and safe evacuation of trapped residents.
Joint Involvement: Ukrainian officials and the White House also noted diplomatic coordination involving Melania Trump alongside the Vatican's efforts.
Vatican Mission: Archbishop Luis Marín de San Martín, the Prefect of the Dicastery for the Service of Charity, is scheduled to travel to Ukraine from October 27 to October 30 to oversee direct papal assistance.
