Is AI making students worse at thinking? Yes it is. When AI hands over the answer, the thinking that should have built the skill never happens. That fear is real. But to be fair, AI is not the only thing weakening cognitive abilities. Long before AI, education systems have been dealing with failure by making it easier to look at, not by making students more capable: → Softer grade labels, so “fail” no longer appears on the report. → Softer study materials, so fewer students get stuck, and fewer learn how to get unstuck. → A mark recorded, and the thinking behind it never looked at. → A right answer reached the wrong way passing unnoticed, while the habit stays. Every one of these hides the gap. None of them closes it. At LoWisa.dev our mission is to strengthen cognitive abilities: the thinking skills behind every answer. That means recognising patterns, weighing uncertainty, finding the best option, seeing how a system fits together, judging trade-offs, making decisions and finding the root cause. And we are doing it with the same AI people fear, by making it useful: on the areas that have been overlooked for generations, and on the harm AI itself can do when it thinks for the learner. A failed exam is one of the biggest places cognitive ability is weakened, and few approaches have fixed it: the mark arrives, the thinking is never fixed, and the gap follows the student. At the Meta Global AI Developer Hackathon we are taking it on head on with From Exam to Mastery with the teacher in charge. Built so far with Meta’s AI: → One phone photographs the class’s handwritten papers. Muse Spark reads the names and marks the thinking, not just the answer. → No verdict: every question not yet mastered, including a right answer with wrong thinking, goes into a Mastery Plan. → Each one becomes a mastery level built from the student’s own handwriting. Still figuring out: getting every task the AI writes right first time, and reading real classroom handwriting at scale. The AI never does the thinking.
