New blog post: GEO is a distraction. I looked at 12 months of GA4 data across 100 sites - more than 145 million sessions. ChatGPT sent 0.62% of the traffic Google organic did. With all the other LLMs included, it's 0.73%. While ChatGPT visitors converted better at 13.8% vs 3.02% for Google organic, Google still drove 27x more conversions than all the other LLMs combined. And remember how we thought ChatGPT visitors would increase exponentially? Overall visits from ChatGPT have actually been declining since GPT-5 came out in August 2025. I think GEO is a distraction. Google is the surface that's likely sending the most visitors to your business. Yes, AI is changing how people use the web, but the real opportunities are just emerging. I'd encourage you to spend time preparing for the agentic web - UCP, Universal Cart, WebMCP, intelligent eyewear and more! The full post is here, plus a prompt you can use to brainstorm on what agentic search means for your business. mariehaynes.com/geo-is-a-dis…

Your dog carries your stress in its body for months. A 2019 study in Scientific Reports measured cortisol in the hair of 58 dogs and their owners over a full year and found that the two rose and fell together. When you are stressed, your dog is stressed. When you calm down, so does it. The synchrony was not driven by walks, weather, or the dog's own life events. It was driven by the owner. Dogs whose owners scored higher on personality measures of anxiety showed higher cortisol year-round. The dog's body was tracking the owner's emotional state over months, not moments. The bond between a human and a dog is not a one-way relationship where the human provides and the dog receives. The dog is absorbing the household's emotional weather and carrying it in its endocrine system. Your bad month is its bad month. This is what 15,000 years of co-evolution looks like. The dog did not just learn to read your face. It learned to sync its chemistry to yours, and the hair on its back is keeping a record of how you have been feeling since the last time it was groomed. The next time someone says "it's just a dog," the cortisol data says otherwise. The dog is a mirror with a heartbeat, and the reflection goes deeper than behaviour. pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/3117…

Yes: handwriting still matters. A new study has confirmed that writing by hand activates far more complex and widespread neural networks in the brain than typing, underscoring its importance for learning and memory. Researchers at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology used a high-density EEG cap with 256 electrodes to record brain activity in university students. They found that the intricate, sensory-rich movements involved in handwriting, especially cursive, trigger highly synchronized brain waves across extensive areas of the parietal and central regions. These coordinated patterns are strongly linked to memory formation, cognitive processing, and encoding new information. In contrast, typing, which involves repetitive, simpler finger movements, produced significantly less neural connectivity and engagement. The difference was striking: the brain appears much less active during digital writing. The researchers conclude that the unique motor and sensory experience of holding a pen plays a key role in brain development and learning. As a result, they argue that handwriting instruction should remain a core part of education to support deeper comprehension and cognitive growth in the next generation. Wow.
