A Muslim student confronts Steven Crowder over Islam and hate speech — and it turns out to be his biggest mistake. Muslim: You said people you disagree with should be given the full spotlight. But after someone wrote “Stop Islam” on campus, some of my friends were threatened and beaten up. With violence against Muslims reportedly rising, where do you think the line is between an opinion and hate speech? Steven Crowder: Your Muslim friends got beaten up because of chalk? Muslim: One of my friends wasn't even Muslim, but people assumed he was because of how he dressed. He actually changed the way he dressed because of it. Steven Crowder: Nobody would condone beating someone up because of how they dress. But no one is condoning violence against Muslims either. I think it's perfectly legitimate to criticise the ideology of Islam. If you want to understand it, read the Quran. Audience Member: Don't make assumptions. Talk to Muslims! Steven Crowder: We've had Muslims on my show many times. I listened to what they had to say, and I disagreed with them. That's my opinion. I'm talking about the Quran and the ideology, not speaking on behalf of Muslims. Audience Member: But saying being Muslim is bad Steven Crowder: I'm saying the ideology of Islam has serious problems. It's not racist to criticise a religion or an ideology. I don't like it. Milo Yiannopoulos: Islam is a set of ideas, and we're entitled to interrogate those ideas and find them wanting. As a gay man, I'm also deeply concerned about attitudes toward homosexuality and women within some Muslim communities. I'm not frightened by terrorists. I'm frightened by Islam. Steven Crowder: The basic question is: when does free speech become hate speech? That's a silly question. If someone says something you don't like, you don't get to simply label it hate speech. A call to action is different. If I threaten to punch you and actually do it, that's an action. But people should be free to say what they think. Muslim: My friend was beaten up because of something you said! Steven Crowder: Who was beaten up because of something I said? That's what we call being unable to substantiate an argument. Get out.
