Folks tonight is a very special night for me
18 years ago tonight, in 2008, on the night before my 8th birthday, I accepted Jesus Christ into my heart as my Lord and Savior.
It was the best decision I have ever made.
Is being a Christian easy? No.
I remember something Johnny Cash once said: “Being a Christian isn’t for sissies. It takes a real man to live for God, a lot more man than to live for the devil."
I believe that is absolutely correct.
Being a Christian is like John Bunyan’s The Pilgrim’s Progress. There are going to be mountains, valleys, obstacles, and trials along the journey. But through all of it, I know Jesus Christ is with me every day.
One of my favorite quotes from The Book of Eli says:
“It’s faith. It’s the flower of light in the field of darkness that’s giving me the strength to carry on.”
That is what faith has given me.
When we go through the trials of life, I’m reminded of a John Mark McMillan lyric about having no answers for heartbreak or cancer, but having a Savior who suffers them
with us.
That is the truth.
Am I perfect? Absolutely not. I make mistakes. When I do, I repent and ask God for forgiveness. And God forgives me. That’s why I like Jason Whitlock so much.
I read the Bible every day, and I always learn something new when I read it. I even read some of the Apocryphal books.
And if Denzel Washington can read the Bible every day, so can you.
You don’t have to start by reading for hours. Start with 10–15 minutes a day. Open the Bible and see what you discover.
When people have questions about Christianity, faith, or the mysteries of life, I often think about something C.S. Lewis wrote:
“Christianity, if false, is of no importance, and if true, of infinite importance.”
Think about that.
If I’m wrong about Christianity, then I’ve been wrong about one life.
But if Christianity is true, then I am right about the most important thing that has ever happened in world history.
That is why I take my faith seriously.
Johnny Cash spoke about different types of Christians: “There's three different kinds of Christian: preaching Christians, church-playing Christians, and then there's practicing Christian. I'm trying very hard to be a practicing Christian.”
Again Cash hit the nail on the head here.
I want to talk about Christianity on this channel. I don’t want to approach it from a particular denominational viewpoint. I want to talk about the basic truths, questions, history, and ideas surrounding Christianity.
18 years ago tonight, a 7-year-old boy made the most important decision of his life.
I am very thankful that I did.
Jesus Christ is my Lord and Savior.
God bless you all.
