Andy Burnham has admitted he is open to reopening the floodgates.
As Prime Minister, he has called for an “honest discussion” about bringing back EU freedom of movement as part of a closer relationship with Brussels. That is not a cautious technical remark.
It is a clear signal that the borders Britain voted to control are once again up for negotiation.
Freedom of movement means any EU citizen can live and work here with the same rights as British people, with no skills test, no salary threshold, and no overall limit.
We have already seen what large-scale, low-control migration does to housing, wages in lower-paid sectors, school places, GP lists, and social cohesion. Reintroducing free movement on top of the existing pressures would accelerate those strains further.
