Twice the labeled field rate of #glufosinate failed to completely control this Wisconsin #waterhemp population (picture taken 14 days after treatment).
Plants were 3 inches tall and treated under ideal conditions. A concerning observation.
🌱 Exploring end-of-season weed control through seed destruction.
Last week, we visited Jim Reul at Reul Farms in Rice Lake, northern Wisconsin, where he has installed the Redekop Harvest Weed Seed Control system on his combine.
We collected samples to evaluate how effectively the technology crushes and devitalizes waterhemp seeds — targeting weed seeds at harvest before they return to the soil.
Preliminary findings look promising. Lab testing is ongoing, so stay tuned for more updates!
Harvest weed seed control could be another valuable strategy in an integrated weed management program.
A big thank you to Jim for welcoming us to his farm. We greatly appreciate the opportunity to work directly with our farmers and industry stakeholders to evaluate technologies and advance practical weed management strategies.

Proper adjuvant selection matters! Always start with the herbicide label to determine which adjuvant(s) are required for optimal performance.

One of the main reasons, IMO, we can’t get rid of #waterhemp—despite deploying all the effective tools at our disposal within our fields:
Check out Livia Venturi’s update on #WiscWeeds’ planting-green research from the 2026 UW–Madison Arlington Agronomy and Soils Field Day!
Although cereal rye biomass intercepted some of the POST herbicide spray, it also altered #waterhemp growth and architecture. Waterhemp plants growing in rye were more slender and vulnerable, resulting in greater and more consistent control than without rye, even with less spray reaching the target.
That’s the beauty of integrated weed management: combining complementary tactics to achieve better weed control.
⚠️ HPPD resistance is one to watch closely.
These photos from Dr. Luma Loureiro show a #waterhemp (Amaranthus tuberculatus) population confirmed resistant to mesotrione applied POST (left) and PRE (right).
HPPD-inhibitors (Group 27 herbicides) are critical tools in #corn, and their importance will only grow as new #soybean traits expand opportunities for HPPD use.
More use = more selection pressure!
We need to be good stewards of HPPD-inhibitors and protect their utility across cropping systems.

We would like to invite you to join us for the 2026 Wisconsin Extension Weed Management Workshop on Wednesday, September 2, at the Arlington Agricultural Research Station.
This year's workshop, "From Basics to Breakthroughs: Managing Weeds in a Resistance Era," will bring together farmers, crop consultants, agronomists, Extension educators, students, scientists, and industry professionals for a full day of science-based strategies to improve weed management in Wisconsin and beyond.
Registration is required, and we encourage you to reserve your spot early: cropsandsoils.extension.wisc…
We are especially excited to welcome two outstanding keynote speakers:
Dr. Patrick Tranel (University of Illinois) – one of the world's leading authorities on the genetics and biology of herbicide resistance. This is a unique opportunity to hear directly from Dr. Tranel about the evolution of herbicide resistance, the underlying mechanisms, and where the science is headed.
Mr. Greg Dahl (CPDA Director of Adjuvant Education) – one of the nation's foremost experts on spray adjuvants and application technology. Greg has an exceptional ability to translate complex concepts into practical recommendations that can help improve herbicide performance in the field.
Beyond the keynote presentations, the workshop will feature the #WiscWeeds team sharing the latest research and Extension recommendations on integrated weed management, herbicide stewardship, resistance management, and hands-on field demonstrations.
We're also excited to have two interactive portions in this year's program:
Farmer Panel Discussion: Hear directly from Wisconsin farmers as they share the integrated weed management strategies that are working on their operations to combat herbicide-resistant weeds. This will be an excellent opportunity to learn from real-world experiences and engage in an open discussion with fellow growers.
Weed Identification Quiz: Test your weed identification skills in a fun, interactive challenge featuring common and emerging weed species found in Wisconsin cropping systems.
CCA Pest Management CEUs will also be available for participants.
Whether you're looking to strengthen the fundamentals, hear from nationally recognized experts, learn from fellow farmers, or stay current with the latest research and management strategies, this workshop has something for everyone.

Ultra-precise target sprayers like the Ecorobotix ARA can spray nonselective herbicides in non-GMO crops without crop injury! While herbicide regulations don’t currently permit this, researchers are excited for what this could mean for growers’ weed control options in the future.
