AMZN’s Q3'26 earnings report featured several key themes: 1) AWS’s revenue growth rate (+39%) & segment GAAP operating margin (39%) exceeded GSe/Street estimates but came in shy of some investor expectations; 2) identifying and characterizing a flywheel effect across the rise/adoption of AI and traditional cloud workloads; 3) custom silicon continues to rise as a competitive advantage; 4) commerce margins continued to make positive upward trajectory progress; & 5) mgmt. expressed rising confidence in the ROIC profile from AI capital investments. Across these takeaways, we came away from the totality of those themes and key points with an increased confidence in our 12-months+ framework for AMZN shares.

In our preview note we dreamed of a scenario where Azure could accelerate into high 40’s and M365 Commercial Cloud growing close to 20%. While we were not fully sure on the timing, Microsoft gave us the answer this quarter, beating on every major metric and delivering both Azure (48% CC and guiding for 49-50% next quarter) and Office acceleration and guiding to further acceleration next quarter. Given the strong results and solid guidance, stock was up 3% in the aftermarket.
While the results were solid we believe the lower than expected CAPEX and delays in capacity this quarter and for H2 created some unwarranted noise. Timing of capacity adds are open to numerous factors and while it would have been nice to see that additional capacity driving an even bigger Azure beat and faster growth next quarter the company is executing extremely well, especially on driving efficiencies across Azure which allowed them to beat this quarter and guide to 49-50% growth next quarter even considering the delay. These efficiencies will deliver dividends for years in margins and performance
