Hugely important wisdom for all coaches to heed here.
Replying to @pntrack
51 years ago I was the starting QB as a junior at Oswego HS. We had a team that expected to go 9-0. We had two D1 offensive linemen, a 6’3” tight end who would be heavily recruited, and a 50+ shot putter at FB that became a D3 superstar. And, I could sling it.
We practiced old school. We were on the field six hours a day for two weeks of double sessions.
Our coach often repeated, “We are going to break you down and build you back stronger”.
“Walking wounded” would be a good description of 10% of the team after two weeks.
If we would have timed max velocities, the entire team would have been -2 or -3 mph. We didn’t lift once the season started, so we probably lost 10% of our strength. And, we were TIRED.
Once games started, injuries piled up. 3 key offensive starters sustained career ending injuries in the first 4 games. (I got injured in game-4 and never played again.) At every practice, 10-20% of the team watched in street clothes.
We got destroyed in our final 5 games, ended 2-7, and our coach got fired.
Expectation was 9-0.
Be intentional about the health of your 🏈 team.
And… SPEED IS THE BAROMETER OF HEALTH. ⚡️⚡️⚡️

Ben McCollum won 4 national titles at Northwest Missouri State.
His biggest lesson came before any of them.
Day one, first practice, he walks in and thinks:
"This is what first place feels like."
Not on the scoreboard. In the room.
First-place people work hard — but it's more than that. There's an edge.
And there's energy.
The guys who didn't make it weren't bad kids. They were just moody. Flat. They took life out of the building.
Culture isn't built by talent.
It's built by people who bring work, edge, and energy every day.
First-place people don't just perform.
They raise the room.

There are no shortcuts, secrets, or laws of attraction. There is only putting in the reps. Confidence is really just doing the work and then having the faith to trust it. On Jalen Brunson, overcoming fear of failure, and gaining true confidence:

A core insight in my new book is that you perform better when you build an identity house with more than just one room. Side quests and other interests don't hurt, they actually help. It's true for athletes and for all of us: bit.ly/4uCzeQ7

Ready to roll! Couldn't ask for a better test of where we're at than a game against a great squad in X!
See you there at the Rugby Pitch right across the field from the high school!
$5 entry at gate.
Principle 11: Train Speed, When Training Speed.
Speed & conditioning both matter, but they aren’t the same.
If goal is speed, athletes need high-quality reps, max output, & enough rest to repeat it. Too little rest = conditioning.
Train w/ intention.

The guy squirting water into Zach Ertz’s mouth is Joe O’Pella. He’s an athletic trainer that’s been with the team for over 15 years at this point.
NFL teams don’t really have water boys, athletic trainers are usually the ones responsible for having water on the practice field and during games, but this post is absolutely hilarious.
A guy who rehabbed my ACL tear in my second year, has a masters degree from Pitt, and has years of experience keeping Eagles players healthy and on the field being called a “Waterboy” is crazy, and I’m already giving him shit for it, but good lord this post is so wildly misleading.
Either way, thought I’d clear the air, that the people with Water Bottles during games actually serve much bigger roles on NFL Teams.
Wow: NFL waterboys earn over 3 THOUSAND dollars per game, which averages out to more than $50K per season, not including tips.
Waterboys also attend practices, handle locker room prep, and travel with the team.
What a fantastic job to have 💸📈

Per a former Eagle employee, this is an athletic trainer.

First two league matches of the season in the books. Early season results can be ugly as we teach the game, the systems, and the mentalities needed in rugby to newer players. Had to pivot through some key injuries this week as well.
