My favorite 100 movies:

Where is the movie theater, and where are exciting stories being told? And where is Tom Ford? I feel more and more like a nocturnal animal.

There are few movies from the 1980s that impress me. Popcorn and blockbusters were all the rage. Cassavetes’ Gloria made it into the 80s by the skin of its teeth, but it’s actually a 70s movie.
Gloria hated kids, but was incorruptible. Go #Gloria.
Königsberg Castle, built in the 13th century, was demolished by the Soviets in 1965. The House of Soviets was planned for the site in 1970.
I visited Kaliningrad in 2015: still unfinished. Brutalism can erase a city's history.
Today: the building is gone for good.
The first sign that we've lost the battle against the machines is when a website asks you to confirm that you're human.
Please confirm.
Thomas #Mann, one of Germany’s greatest writers, won the 1929 Nobel Prize. A vocal Nazi critic, he entered the US in 1934 without a passport. He became a US citizen in 1944, but left America in the early 1950s after being questioned by HUAC.
Straw Dogs (1971) explores the mechanisms of violence, directed by Sam Peckinpah with gripping intensity. Parts are hard to stomach. The brutality is never softened by irony or detachment, yet the ending may feel cathartic to many.
David Sumner got 'em all!
High Plains Drifter (1973) is one of my favorite Westerns. Pure minimalism, deeply influenced by Sergio Leone. The West here is bleak, brutal and morally corrupt—not the heroic frontier of John Wayne’s generation.
My first shoe. Dad said it used to hang from the rearview mirror of every car he owned, and he texted me yesterday to say it was his talisman. A lovely thought.
In 1991, 23-year-old Robert Rodriguez made #ElMariachi for just seven grand. With a little more money spent on post-production, his DIY crime thriller went from Mexican TV to cinemas—and launched him into Hollywood. An extraordinary story of resourcefulness and ambition.
Until now, Doyle is an aggressive, racist cop. This seemingly irrelevant sequence adds another layer: it reveals his awkward private side. Friedkin’s documentary style and the scene’s dry humor add to the film’s authenticity. #TheFrenchConnection
All the way to the F.B.I.

In Raymond Chandler's novel, Marlowe lives in a house on Yucca Avenue in Laurel Canyon, accessed by a long staircase. The rent wasn't low because the house was run-down, but because of that damn staircase. In the film, Robert Altman has Marlowe use an elevator. #TheLongGoodbye
Haven't written much lately, but I've been composing and recording music instead. Took so long because I had to learn the instruments and get the hang of the recording process in Reaper.

I rarely talk about politics here, but today I have to make an exception. Political ideologies should never influence a work of art. #LeonardCohen #Writing
Roman Polanski on the set of Chinatown. Everything just clicks here: a visionary director with one of the best screenplays ever written. Nicholson and Dunaway are at the top of their game. It's hunting season.
