Studies show there has been a huge increase in people seeking sterilization procedures, like getting their tubes tied or vasectomies, since the overturning of Roe v. Wade and abortion bans being enacted in states. The Health Affairs journal found that from May to August 2022, adults between the ages of 19 to 26 sought out the procedures in higher numbers: vasectomies went up by 95%, and tubal sterilizations by 70%, especially in states that were more likely to implement an abortion ban. The numbers spiked again after Donald Trump’s reelection in November. Planned Parenthood of New England saw a 368% increase for vasectomies alone. With birth control on the line, along with concerns about the climate crisis and other sociopolitical issues, doctors across the country are seeing higher numbers of people opting out of having children. ‘We’re seeing a huge increase in the number of couples who think the world is too awful a place to bring children into,’ Marc Goldstein, a board-certified urologic surgeon specializing in male infertility at New York’s Weill Cornell Medicine, told the Washington Post.
