Gurugram cops caught taking a ₹1,000 bribe from a Japanese for driving without a helmet. Note : "bribe", not fine.
They probably didn’t realize he had a camera recording. After the video went viral, Gurugram police handles suddenly turned morally upright, claiming such acts “won’t be tolerated” and suspended the cops involved.
They should instead say that "any such act caught on camera" won’t be tolerated, because off-camera this is routine traffic police behavior. They stop people they think can pay, scare them with talk of court and hassles, and nudge them toward paying a bribe instead of the fine.
As if looting their own people wasn’t profitable enough, now they’ve expanded the business to foreigners too.
