The tension between Retail users and Power users I know a lot of protocol care about TVL and their whale users more than retail, but i would alway stand the retail side. And here is why: Back when I worked in traditional finance, one key IPO checklist item was checking customer concentration. If a company relied too heavily on just 1-2 clients, it was a red flag. And I actually think this complies the same to DeFi. 1/ If a protocol’s liquidity or activity is dominated by a few whales, it means loosing 1 or 2 would destroy the liquidity and flow of the entire protocol. Protocols twill face exit pressure. While retail brings resilience through user distribution. 2/ Concentration = manipulation risk. A whale can single-handedly affect governance, vote outcomes, or even manipulate LPs and rewards. Retail minimizes this risk via decentralization of power. 3/ Over-reliance on whales might also mean the product doesn't have real market appeal. It’s not product-led growth, but more of “relationship-led” capital. 4/ If a product only attracts power users, it often becomes a race to the bottom on incentives. Everyone in the same lane is fighting for the same TVL — which means more emissions, higher costs, and no sustainable growth. 5/ Web3 is different — your retail today could be your whales tomorrow. Therefore i think building with retail would always be my take, loving my community and shaping our product to serve the real needs of the many.
