You're a world-famous veteran of dozens of debates against the world's top intellectuals, and I've never argued in public before, so adjusting for the relative correctness of our positions, if you're a betting man I'm happy to put my $5000 against your $1000 (ie 5:1 odds in your favor) that I'll win by some standard of audience opinion change. After every mass shooting a layperson will make the mistake of misusing a word like "assault gun" or "automatic weapon", leading to a certain kind of asshole (you know the type) to pounce and ridicule them.
But I notice that this same type of kno-it-all doesn't mind opining on AI risk, while being unfamiliar with relevant terminology like VM, model, training, etc.
Any other android chrome users get opted into some "bottom bar" UI experiment? Absolutely horrible waste of screen real estate, and more fallout from having AI features we dont want jammed in every where.
I really did think Mitch McConnell had died. Sure I can't be the only one. Maybe my satire meter is broken. (Inverted?) I interpreted all the jokes about his death in literally the opposite way.
Thus ends the brief period where coherent debate about AI safety was possible. Trump weighed in. Politics-brain will determine every conversation from now on. In a few weeks, you will be able to predict, with 95% accuracy, someone's opinion on this complicated question based solely on their opinion of Trump.

The AI-kills-everybody arguments seem plausible to me, which is terrifying.
Bit idk, it just seems even *more* likely that befoee this happens, AI will be used in some bad way as a weapon by a HUMAN.
They arent mutually exclusive, i suppose. 😬

Still not impressed with Claude's ability to write lots of code from scratch.
But man, it has some *killer* apps:
- Code reviews
- Mechanical changes
- Diagnosing random bugs given a log
- Security audit
- Rubber duck / research assistant (Who calls this? If I make this change, what's the blast radius? Am I reading this code correctly? Is XYZ assumption correct? Is this code dead?)
- Perforce/git archeology (Why was it done this way? By whom?)
- PR triage
Writing tests.....pretty good, but actually I've had mixed results here. Mostly useful, but sometimes it can write tests for stuff you really don't need, and sometimes it doesn't understand what the core thing that needs to be tested is unless you tell it. Also, sometimes it can write "change detector tests" (a term from google engineering, i think) that are worse than nothing.
Every single time I get in my truck Google maps does not know which way I'm facing until I start moving. So of course I pull out heading the wrong direction.
But my truck has a compass, and it knows! I feel like this is an opportunity. Why don't they talk to each other???
I'm enjoying the 2nd season of Rings of Power. I bounced off of it after the first season, and S2E1 was so bad I didnt watch the rest. Nothing happened!
But it picks up and the last few episodes are really good.
