Very sad news for the Yorkshire farming community, and indeed the wider farming community across the UK. Rest in peace, Frank Carr 🙏

Not everything has to be looked at through the lens of discrimination.
Conservatives managed to choose our first woman leader 51 years ago. Meanwhile Labour are celebrating Andy Burnham as their first female Prime Minister.
Claire has been promoted because she is excellent and Conservatives believe in meritocracy.
If Harriet is worried about discrimination, there is plenty in her own party to keep her busy.
Boris Johnson promoted me to the Treasury while I was on maternity leave in 2020. Nobody did a podcast episode on it because we didn’t think it was remarkable. He just knew I could do the job.
Women do not need patronising theories to explain their success. That is the point.
Time was, @ClaireCoutinho, that women had to conceal pregnancy, fearing the sack. We fought against maternity discrimination so that women could be promoted on merit not sacked for pregnancy. I’m glad you’ve escaped mat discrimination. But it’s still a problem. How about siding with us to banish it? @ThenScrewed

Until last week, men over 50 were entitled to a free PSA prostate cancer check. But the government has now decided to withdraw that right. I cannot for the life of me work out what their reasoning might be.

This has been a relentless summer for British farmers.
The gruelling heat has drained water supplies, crop yields and incomes.
I understand the worry that comes with that, and I know farmers need more than the government's appreciation.
It's why I went to a farm in Cornwall today to speak to some of them and @NFUtweets directly about our support package.

Still haven’t heard anything from Andy Burnham on how he intends to support rural communities and farmers….

Right to bitter end, utterly delusional.

19 seconds in Southport laying a wreath, no tears.
No tears for British farmers who committed suicide.
No tears for pensioners.
No tears for betrayed British veterans.
No tears for the victims of illegal migration.
No tears for Henry Nowak.
Tears for himself only.

Keir Starmer resigns and repeats his claim that he always “puts the country first.”
Thousands of farmers beg to differ about that claim.

So @AndyBurnhamGM - are you going to support farmers and ensure national food security?

Myth: "I only wear vegan fabrics. Better for the animals, better for the planet."
Let's check in on Doris's annual contribution.
Once a year, in late spring, Doris is sheared. The procedure takes approximately three minutes. Doris does not enjoy it. Doris does not, by any visible measure, suffer from it. Doris is, immediately afterwards, a noticeably more comfortable animal in the British summer.
The fleece weighs approximately 3 kilograms. It is sold to the British Wool Marketing Board for, depending on the year, between £0.40 and £2.50 per kilogram. The shearing costs more than the wool fetches. Brian is shearing Doris at a loss.
The wool is then:
- Naturally flame-retardant
- Naturally antibacterial
- Moisture-wicking
- Biodegradable
- Renewable, annually
- Carbon-storing while in use
The replacement, in performance fabrics:
- Polyester
- Polyamide
- Acrylic
- Polypropylene
- All petroleum-derived
- All shedding microplastics on every wash
- All requiring fossil fuel inputs to produce
- All non-biodegradable, with a typical landfill lifespan of 200-500 years
A single wash of a polyester fleece can release up to 700,000 microplastic fibres into the water system. These fibres are now in: every tested water source on earth, every tested human placenta, every tested rainfall sample, the deep ocean, the Arctic ice, and the lungs of marine mammals.
A single wash of a wool jumper releases: nothing. The wool, when eventually disposed of, returns to soil within a few years.
The fabric being marketed as the "ethical" alternative to wool is plastic.
The plastic is "ethical" because nobody has been asked to slaughter the polymer.
The polymer also has not been asked.
Doris, by being a sheep on a fell, is producing the most thoroughly sustainable performance fabric humans have ever made.
Brian is selling it at a loss.
The fashion industry, meanwhile, is selling petroleum at a profit and calling it ethical.
Reject plastic. Wear wool.
Doris is, this morning, growing next year's batch.

Keir Starmer said this in 2023:
“Every day seems to bring a new existential risk to British farming.
“Losing a farm is not like losing any other business, you can’t come back…you deserve better than that.”
Instead, he did the opposite. He punished farmers.

From today, family farms and family businesses are subject to the Labour government’s inheritance tax. This is having a devastating impact on family businesses. Generational family businesses are being punished and in many cases, unable to afford the financial impact. Shameful.
