🧵URGENT. HUMANITARIAN CRISIS IN OLESHKY/THE OCCUPIED TERRITORIES OF THE KHERSON REGION.
I am writing to urgently draw global attention to a severe humanitarian crisis on the Russian-occupied left bank of the Dnipro River in the Kherson region of Ukraine, to seek immediate action
🚨Thousands of Ukrainian civilians, including children and the elderly, are starving in the Russian-occupied Kherson region, including Oleshky/other settlements. Russia is responsible for this man-made famine.
The international community is silent.

An estimated 5,000–6,000 Ukrainian civilians remain held by the Russian occupational authorities and military.
A severe humanitarian crisis: the absence of food deliveries, lack of potable water, medical care, no electricity, gas, or heating.

Roads are mined and monitored by Russian drones. Civilians targeted by Russian drone operators in human safari tactics. Any movement is restricted. Convoys delivering food and medicine are targeted and destroyed. Evacuation routes are mined. Communications are extremely limited.
The only escape route is a long journey through Russia and Belarus, exposing Ukrainian civilians to filtration, detention and abuse, but it is blocked at this moment.
A burial crisis is in place, with bodies left unattended in public spaces and no functioning morgue facilities.
Ukrainian social media, particularly Threads, carries multiple pleas from families and residents asking the world to save these civilians, but these voices are not reaching the English-language information space.
UN report:

A US journalist based in Kherson, I document the crisis since Feb 2026. I use testimonies from evacuees and civilians in the occupied areas; data from Ukrainian authorities in exile; Kherson military regional administration data; photos/videos from the Ukrainian military 🔗⬇️
In April, I presented the concept of a humanitarian green corridor via the Dnipro River in Brussels.
In May, I discussed the proposal with Ukraine’s Ombudsman in Kyiv.
In July, an EU Parliament petition for international support and urgent evacuation was submitted.
I have presented my research to the UN and Human Rights Watch; both organizations have investigated the crisis independently and called for urgent international action to establish a humanitarian corridor for civilians trapped on the occupied left bank.

I have appealed to EU and US politicians, decision-makers for political support and international monitoring but have received no official replies.
Despite all the efforts of Ukrainian diplomats and the Ombudsman's office, Russia has refused all possible evacuation options.
I urge the EU, US and international partners to:
1. Demand immediate negotiations for a humanitarian corridor
2. Establish and resource international monitoring
3. Elevate the crisis within international diplomatic frameworks

Deep gratitude to the residents of the occupied territories of the Kherson region who trusted me with their testimonies; to the volunteers; to the Ukrainian defenders, and to the officials, politicians, fellow journalists, editors who listened and helped to share the information.
Multiple mainstream, well-known international publications consistently refused to publish any information about Oleshky and surrounding areas of the occupied Kherson region, explaining that the deaths by starvation of thousands of civilians were "of no interest.”
We do not have time. Humans are starving to death and being hunted by drones. Now.
