As a dairy farmer, here are my personal experiences. Feeds have gradually become expensive. In 2022, i was buying hay at ksh 180 a bale, its now 400 to 500 . So subsidising during droughts is difficult. Land preparation per acre also tripled so less tilllage for sileage. Feeds prices up, yet milk prices remain constant.
We celebrated this announcement just then milk started disappearing from supermarket shelves and shops.
This is a first, for the last two weeks, you cannot find milk. The attendant at Chandarana Nyali told me to "try your luck in the morning."
When and how did we get to this point?
Something has broken down somewhere.
We have had a vibrant milk and dairy products industry, and suddenly there is nothing, yet we are being told we now lead Africa in production. Charity begins at home. Lead here first.
