Yesterday, we gathered agencies and partners in the @nycemergencymgt Situation Room to stress-test our winter readiness and prepare for weather emergencies to come. Winter is coming and New York City is ready.

I grew up in a world Dolores Huerta helped make. Every time a worker in this city organizes for a fair wage, every time a tenant, delivery worker, or a nanny stands up and demands better, they join a tradition she forged. She led without asking permission. She organized farmworkers when the country looked away, took the grape boycott to every corner of America, and won protections that changed millions of lives. Her work started in California’s fields, but it was never only for California. Families in New York, in Texas, and in the Midwest followed in her footsteps and learned from her example, without ever meeting her. Her bravery and fight for justice continued until the very end of her life, when she came forward to share the truth about what she had survived -- even though silence would have been easier. She taught us that sí se puede and lived it every day. New York mourns Dolores Huerta. Let us honor her by continuing the work.

New federal work requirements are putting food and health care benefits at risk for thousands of New Yorkers. We've launched a new online resource to help you understand these changes. Check if you qualify for exemptions and find the support you need to keep your SNAP and Medicaid benefits at NYC.gov/workrules.

Yesterday we brought the spirit of the beautiful game to life at the Cost of Living Classic, where New Yorkers came together for an afternoon of free soccer and friendly rivalries. From the pitch to the sidelines, the beautiful game reminds us that the joy of community and belonging in an affordable city should be within reach for every New Yorker.

New Yorkers experience the abundant contributions of our Eastern European neighbors every day. As we pair syrniki with sour cream in Brighton Beach, look in wonder at a Chagall painting at MoMA and banter with babushkas in Rego Park. Last week, we celebrated Eastern European heritage at Gracie Mansion, because the story of New York City cannot be told without the story of our Eastern European neighbors. From new immigrants to those who've lived here for generations, Eastern Europeans have built New York City. We owe them a city they can afford to call home.

Nothing and no one should stand between New Yorkers and their right to vote — least of all the government. Early voting is happening now through November 1. Election Day is November 3. See you at the polls!

For more than 50 years, the Labor Council for Latin American Advancement (LCLAA) has championed a proud tradition of labor organizing, amplified Latino voices within the AFL-CIO, and united workers in the fight for dignity, collective power and solidarity. It was an honor to join LCLAA in Astoria to celebrate this legacy and reaffirm our shared commitment to a city where every worker, every immigrant community and every New Yorker is respected, protected and empowered.

In 1972, a group of Harlem Renaissance cultural icons gathered at Duke Ellington's house. The afternoon was captured on 16mm film by William Greaves, but the footage remained unedited in a vault for 50 years until David Greaves restored and completed his father's project, releasing the documentary in 2026. Once Upon a Time in Harlem is a film that every New Yorker should see — and this weekend you can, at no cost. We partnered with the filmmakers to offer free screenings this Saturday and Sunday at the Lincoln Center, Film Forum, and Magic AMC in Harlem. Go to on.nyc.gov/seeharlem to reserve a seat.
