Black Americans get audited more, even among individuals claiming the EITC. It's because the IRS chooses who to audit based on who it suspects of overclaiming tax credits like the EITC or CTC, instead of who it suspects underpaid the most.

NEW: Are Black taxpayers more likely to be audited than non-Black taxpayers? We analyze 148MM returns + 780K audits; find yes, 3-5x more likely. Why? (Joint work w/ @jacobsgoldin, @DanHo1, @evelyn_a_smith, @_ArunRamesh, & Tom Hertz & Robin Fisher @ Treasury. Opinions our own.)

The people of NYC, Baltimore, Boston & 9 largest CA cities can expect worse policing, more stolen guns, and an extra ~6,096 violent gun crimes/year thanks to today's #scotus decision. Stay tuned for forthcoming NBER WP w @JohnDonohueSLS @SamuelCai & Phil Cook! #EconTwitter
