The new Prime Minister is writing a "10-year plan" for the UK. @andyburnham, the arts and culture MUST be part of it. We've launched an urgent petition to make sure the arts can play their part in revitalising the nation 🌱 Add your name ✏️ campaignforthearts.org/petit…

“There are parts of this Budget that will help the arts, and which we welcome: changes to business rates that will benefit many cultural organisations; paid parental leave for self-employed workers; new local powers, such as visitor levies, which could benefit culture if they are used well; and £15m to put books into children’s hands through BookTrust and Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. But the Budget did nothing to reverse the long-term, overall decline in public investment in culture, and the spending plans it leaves in place point to a further squeeze. Today the Chancellor said he wants to ‘reject crude cuts’ that ‘drive up costs elsewhere in the system’. He is right, and cuts to culture are a case in point: their costs are felt in people’s wellbeing, in the vibrancy of local communities and in our social fabric. We hope he will keep this in mind when setting plans for culture spending at next year’s Spending Review. The government’s 10-year plan, due later this year, is a real opportunity to change course. Over 50,000 people have signed our petition asking for the arts to be part of it: available from childhood, accessible to all and thriving everywhere. By revitalising the arts, we can revitalise the nation.” Image credit: 📸 Carrie Davenport 💃 Fidget Feet performing at Earthchild 2026, presented by @artsekta 📍 Titanic Belfast

We're deeply concerned that the Shadow Culture Secretary appears to be arguing for an end to almost all public investment in arts & culture. A cut of this magnitude would be unprecedented and catastrophic. We've requested a full explanation of the numbers and a serious rethink.
We will cut the arts & culture budget by £1bn in order to fund 50,000 prison places. Keeping rapists and other dangerous offenders locked up is a priority for the @Conservatives. We will always put community safety first. @RichmoMusic If you need help understanding the numbers, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. Always happy to talk you through. thetimes.com/article/77bcee1…

50% of teachers say a crowded curriculum squeezes out the arts. The government must give young people the chance to study a broad range of creative subjects. Sign the open letter if you agree ➡️ tinyurl.com/OpenLetterAM

🎂 This December marks 25 years of universal free admission. Recently, the govt considered changing the policy to charge intl visitors in England. This would've impacted everyone’s visits to national museums & galleries and could've influenced choices in other UK nations too.

🥀 47% drop in the arts' share of GCSE entries in English state schools since 2010 📉 Sharpest drop in arts A-levels in 5 years ⚖️ Students in deprived areas are 3x less likely to take GCSE Drama We look forward to monitoring the Government's progress in reversing these trends.

🎙️ In June, our Director gave evidence in Parliament on the future of the BBC. 📬 Last week, @LordsCommsCom wrote to Lisa Nandy, and we are delighted to see them call for a "bold, confident and unapologetic" approach. CFTA's response ⬇️

Right now, anyone can walk through the doors of any UK national museum or gallery and experience their permanent collection for free – with no barrier, booking, ID or fee. 🎉 On 1 December, we celebrate 25 years of this landmark policy.

Recently, the government has been considering whether to change the policy in England by charging international visitors. 🔮 That would impact everyone’s visits to national museums, including UK residents – and could influence future choices in other UK nations too.

There is now less than one week left to respond to the Government's important consultation on National Lottery funding ⬇️ If you have already submitted your response – thank you. If you haven't had a chance yet, please do so before noon next Weds. 🔗 campaignforthearts.org/news/…
The Government is reviewing National Lottery funding for the first time in almost 25 years – including the 1/5 share that goes to the arts. Shares have shrunk before, and could again. 📸 Lamar Francois 🖼️ @derbytheatre Block Party 📍 Stockbrook Park, Derby

And when he says that he loves the arts in his life, he means they are not essential. That is the thing to fight. Arts and literature are not things to love (Kafka anyone?) They are about thinking harder about things that matter.
“Science and maths degrees offer most value to the nation, says minister.” In some cases that is true. But don’t you have to think more carefully what “value to the nation”. means. Some value isn’t measured in money thetimes.com/article/42df946…

"The crisis in arts education is not just a story of falling enrolment, but widening inequality." 🗣️ CFTA Director in The Stage today on how the raw figures on exam entries hide an even more serious injustice. Whoever we are and wherever we live, we need the arts in our lives.
