Happy Halloween. Here’s our Halloween village with pieces for Dracula, the Wolfman, and Frankenstein's monster ....
“MURDER AS A FINE ART is a masterpiece–I don’t use that word lightly–a fantastic historical thriller . . . It brilliantly recreates the London of gaslit streets, fogs, hansom cabs, and Scotland Yard. I was spellbound.”–Douglas Preston

On the topic of classic horror, I had fun writing the introduction for the 50th anniversary edition of Ira Levin’s novel, ROSEMARY’S BABY (from Pegasus Books).
The horror business in books and film is booming, and not just during Halloween season. Here’s a look at a bookstore and a film studio devoted to the creepy genre in a report from NPR.

Here’s another Halloween haunted-house favorite film. THE OTHERS from 2001. Nicole Kidman stars. Alejandro Amenabar wrote and directed. This very moody film has a twist at the end, which I think viewers should know from the start. Makes every detail more fascinating.
Here’s a link to my recent half-hour radio interview with my friend and radio-host Lynn Cline. We talked about lots of Halloween movies and some projects I’m working on. Lynn's excellent show is Cline's Corner. The local Santa Fe station is KFSR.

Here’s a hilarious take on the modern romantasy novel, by The Guardian’s excellent cartoonist Tom Gauld.

I wouldn’t have written FIRST BLOOD if I hadn’t read a book about Hemingway by Penn State professor Philip Young. I was so impressed, I resolved to move from Canada to the United States and study w/Young. On this podcast I discuss that formative adventure.

44 years ago, this month in 1982, the film adaptation of my novel FIRST BLOOD debuted. I fondly recall the thrill of seeing it with an excited audience. It changed action movies, just as I had the goal of changing action novels.
Bargain alert. The e-book of my first executive-protection novel THE FIFTH PROFESSION is now on sale for $1.99 on Amazon. Lots of fascinating research with world-class protectors.

One of my favorite movies for Halloween, THE CHANGELING, stars George C. Scott as a composer who moves into a haunted mansion in Seattle. Peter Medak directed the 1980 Canadian supernatural horror film. Great stuff.

Just in time for Halloween, Publishers Weekly has an article about the growing popularity of “horromance,” (horror/romance) a “kiss me/kill me” genre that could be a spin off from “romantasy.”

The hottest trend in publishing apparently is part of a centuries-old heritage. Read about “romantasy” and its ties to medieval romances in The Guardian.

“Mysterious lights, an isolated research facility, and characters as real as your next-door neighbor elevate this techno-thriller into a masterpiece of suspense.”—James Rollins

The worst is coming. Over 300 movies and streaming shows have already used A.I., in some cases for writing. Soon the only things I’ll watch will be productions before this year.
