Coach K on Shane Battier’s podcast, telling a story about a call where he asked Battier if he pictured himself as ACC Player of the Year. Battier said no. Coach K hung up on him. Did it again a few days later. Same result. The message: “I’ll stop hanging up on you when you stop hanging up on you.” Battier had put himself in a box. A good box, but still a box. This is the part people miss about great players. It’s not just skill. It’s the willingness to picture something bigger than what’s comfortable to say out loud. Delusional confidence isn’t a bug. It’s part of the formula.
