Correct, the overarching liberal FP orthodoxy is the US slipped on a banana peel and destroyed Vietnam, Iraq and killed 20K+ Palestinian children in a bumbling good faith attempt to “defend democracy.” Does it make sense? No. Is it a necessary fiction to maintain empire? Clearly.
This ia mainstream position in international relations, most famously articulated by the late Kenneth Waltz.

There seems to be a lot of liberals that haven't come to terms with the fact we double tapped a girls school in Iran, kidnapped the president of Venezuela and stole their oil and gold, blockaded gas into Cuba, and are randomly blowing up fishing boats for no reason.

Piker claims that "pound for pound," America conducts more terror around the world than al-Qaeda.
We don't interrogate enough the fact that so much of American exceptionalism relies on explaining away each of our atrocities as an oopsie.
It's technically true that the US has killed more civilians than al-Qaeda as @hasanthehun says but that's because the US is a superpower of 350 million people and al-Qaeda is a relatively small terror group. It's comparing apples and oranges. Also, key difference: US policymakers for all their faults do not deliberately try to kill Muslim civilians. Al-Qaeda does.

for the millionth time the issue wasn't that the Biden admin "didn't do more". The issue is THEY DID TOO MUCH, in this instance arming, covering up and lying in support of genocide. They want to reframe is as a R2P Rwanda-type situation. It was not. THEY ACTIVELY aided genocide.

Correct. This continues to be one of the biggest problems w/DC's foreign policy community. Any argument that questions US primacy, or offers an alternative approach to US power, results in ad hominem meltdowns that suggest the person is pro China, pro Russia, or hates America.
I've been horrified by the malicious attacks on @jekavanagh. One can disagree with her profoundly on the substance--and I do. But she is seeking policies that, in her mind, benefit US security. We need a public debate based on clear argument, not groundless accusations

25 years post-9/11, the War in Terror is still being fought. And it’s still being fought because you can’t win a war on terror, period.
The U.S. has hit Somalia 80x this year. Strikes have happened in Nigeria. 9/11 statutes like the Patriot Act are alive and well. The 2001 AUMF is still operable and its meaning stretched to the point of being universal. Executive power is through the roof, relegating Congress to an often willing bystander.
Gitmo also remains open, and we’re still trying to convict the perpetrators of 9/11 to this day because of the torture regime that extracted forced confessions.
If anything, the War on Terror has expanded (this time, against drug traffickers in the Western Hemisphere), not contracted. At the very least, it’s normalized. The “with us or against us” vocabulary continues to be used by U.S. officials to this day.
