The White House Correspondents' Dinner shooter bought his gun from Turner’s, which regularly sells guns that turn up at crime scenes in CA.
Yet the state hasn't effectively inspected these stores. When inspections don't happen, crime proliferates.

Yesterday marked a crucial victory for gun safety in CA. @CAgovernor signed three Brady-sponsored bills into law. These laws strengthen safe storage requirements, increase oversight of gun dealers, and mandate the full destruction of seized firearms.🧵⤵️bradyunited.org/about-us/pre…

JUST IN: @AGRobBonta released a gun trace report with critical data on the origins of crime guns recovered by law enforcement in California. This data is a result of hard-won legislation by @ca_brady and more. It will inform urgent solutions to gun trafficking. 🧵

The strongest safe storage bill in the country (SB 53) just passed the CA Assembly's Public Safety Committee🎉
Safe storage saves lives. Many, including @GriffinDix' son, Kenzo, would still be here today if all guns were safely stored. Thanks to @Portantino & @AsmKevinMcCarty!

Gun dealers who sell guns irresponsibly should not be receiving taxpayer dollars, and we're thrilled to see that San Diego agrees.
We're grateful for the passage of the Ira Sharp Firearm Dealer Accountability Act to prevent the spread of crime guns. 🎉 cbs8.com/article/news/local/…

Mattie Scott’s son, George, was shot and killed in 1996. In the many years since his death, George's case still has not been solved. As Mattie tells the @latimes, she's not alone and that's why @AsmMikeGipson's AB 2913 is so important.

In California we still spend $134,000 a year per person to incarcerate people…
but for some reason we can’t ever find the money to help people pay the rent, pay for school, pay for childcare, or afford healthcare.
We have to change this.

If #CAleg wants data — and wants to legislate on public sentiment — we got data:
✅ Restorative justice
✅ Mental health treatment
✅ Credit earning
✅ Diversion opportunities
❌ Incarceration

With a new Whole Pie report, we can re-up one of our favorite graphics with 2022 survey data from @SafeandJustUSA.
The data shows again and again that victims of crime do not want mass incarceration, but want to hold people accountable through options beyond prison.

#SmartSolutions work✅ Across California, Prop 47-funded programs saw employment increase 3x among participants, while participants’ rates of houselessness fell by nearly ½. One LA County Prop 47-funded program reduced recidivism by 17% & cut unemployment rates among participants

In California Prisons you can read Mein Kampf by Hitler, but you can’t read A Prisoner in the Garden by Nelson Mandela.
It’s time to stop banning books that help people transform their lives. Books are not dangerous simply because they were written by people of color.

Retail theft is on the Assembly agenda today. Reminders:
➡️ The problem has been greatly exaggerated.
➡️ Retail theft is multi-faceted — addressing it requires thoughtful, well-targeted solutions.
➡️ Reinstating the failed harsh penalties of the past isn't the answer.
