Our mission: rima.media/en/about#why-impo…
RIMA is a window into the Russian political landscape since 2000, as reported by its independent media. It chronicles the emergence of new independent media in Russia, their reporting on the country's most pressing issues, and how they were gradually outlawed via the laws on foreign agents, fake news or extremism.
RIMA's website features a comprehensive database with website archives, and digitized print publications. We equip researchers, journalists and activists with resources necessary for their work.
We strive not only to preserve Russian independent journalism from erasure, but also to leverage technology in the archival field. We harness the power of modern technology and artificial intelligence to breathe new life into archived content, transforming it into dynamic resources that speak to broader audiences.
Please, subscribe and spread a word to support our mission!🕊️

We are proud to present the restoration of Lenta.doc in partnership with Meduza (@meduza_en). It is a groundbreaking video chronicle created by documentary filmmaker Alexander Rastorguev for Lenta.ru in 2013–2014.
The archive is a treasure trove of the first-person reports that documented key events of the era—Maidan, nationalist marches, trials, protests, and the annexation of Crimea—through a new cinematic language of unfiltered, immersive news.
This project also honors Rastorguev’s legacy and vision: to give every person the chance to be truly heard through the attentive lens of a documentary filmmaker. He was killed on July 30, 2018, in the Central African Republic alongside Orkhan Dzhemal and Kirill Radchenko while investigating Wagner Group activities. The full circumstances of their deaths remain unknown.
We are only beginning our work with the archive. In the coming months, we will expand the collection with hundreds of additional videos and launch a full English-language version of the platform. For now, the restored archive in Russian is available by the link lentadoc.rima.media/catalog
Our co-founder Anna Nemzer, a TV Rain journalist, published a column in The Hill discussing the interplay of truth, archives, and authoritarianism in Russia and the U.S.

Occupied Ukrainian territories now rank below North Korea in the Freedom in the World report.
In today’s material from the Kharkiv Human Rights Protection Group, we share how Russia dragged occupied territories into scoring negative figures (-1/100) on the freedom scale, as measured by Freedom House.
After three years of Russia’s open war of aggression against Ukraine, political rights in Russian-occupied territories of Ukraine have a rating of -2/40, while civil rights are only very slightly higher, at 1/60. In all occupied territories, “the occupation government severely limits political and civil rights, has silenced independent media, and employs antiterrorism and other laws against political dissidents. The rule of law and civil liberties are not respected.”
“Any pro-Ukrainian views remain banned from public discourse and can draw heavy punishment when openly expressed.”
The report would be worth showing to those political leaders who are insisting that Ukraine should accept Russia’s occupation of its territory. Doing so means betraying Ukrainian citizens and abandoning them to a frightening level of lawlessness and lack of freedom.
Read further about the findings of the report (particularly in areas such as change to the ethnic composition of the occupied territory, lack of freedom of faith and expropriation of property) on the Kharkiv Human Rights Protection Group website: khpg.org/en/1608814686

Dr. Giuliano's research argues against such political visions, as they "ignore the reality on the ground and the dynamics between local governors and the Russian government." In an interview with RIMA Dr. Giuliano shares: "There are no demonstrations or opposition movements emerging that we can identify...separatism seems like a far off possibility. Talking about separatism can be dangerous for these national minorities, as they can be viewed as the "Fifth Column" by the government."

Lastly, Dr. Giuliano spoke about her experience using RIMA for her research: "Even before 2014, it was dangerous for American citizens to conduct research in Russia, RIMA has provided a reliable alternative for traditional research."
In terms of website functionality, Elise Giuliano commented:
"It is great that you can toggle between Russian and English so easily....It is also great that there are links to Internet Archive, so you can see the original publication. There's a lot that I'm getting out of RIMA that I did not necessarily think I would - names, contacts - all thanks to links there."
Today, we highlight the research of our Senior Fellow, Elise Giuliano on whether the Russia's war in Ukraine is stimulating Ethnic Grievances in Russia's Republics. Dr. Giuliano directs the Master of Arts in Regional Studies (REERS) and U.S.-Russia Relation Programs at Columbia University.

The question: "What issues anger and mobilize people against Putin regime?" has become pertinent in 2022. After Putin's announcement of partial mobilization in September of that year, the anti-mobilization protests have swept country.
rima.media/en/document/2022-…
The Vesna movement organized nationwide anti-mobilization rallies, focusing on disproportionate ethnic minority conscription. The largest protests occurred in Dagestan, Buryatia, Tuva, Kalmykia, Sakha, and Bashkortostan. In Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov canceled mobilization after mothers' protests in Grozny.
Motivated by indigenous rights, decolonization, and political momentum, NGOs like the Free Nations of PostRussia Forum emerged. In March 2025, they published an article: "Russia on the Brink of Fragmentation: The Illusion of Stability and the Objective Reality."
The organization's website also features a map of the present-day Russia divided in 41 independent states largely based on the ethnic and historic borders.
