A major milestone for the Hudson Tunnel Project: The Gateway Development Commission (GDC) today celebrated the start of tunnel boring for the Hudson Tunnel Project, the first new rail tunnel under the Hudson River in more than 100 years.
The two tunnel boring machines launching this fall will dig approximately one mile through the Palisades Cliffs in New Jersey, advancing about 30 feet per day. After reaching the Hudson County Access Shaft in roughly a year, they’ll be replaced by a second pair of machines that will continue tunneling beneath the Hudson River.
The Port Authority is managing delivery of the Palisades Tunnel construction package in partnership with the Gateway Development Commission.
