We are at a Greening Communities event today. Supported by @YVWater @southeastwater @BarwonWater Irrigation Australia and Greater Western Water. Topic is urban cooling and WSUD maintenance.

Get on board with permeability (roads and kerbs)
6
19
Monitoring of permeable pavement. It is about 2 degrees cooler, compared to standard asphalt. At night they are the same temp.
15
Wetland maintenance required when residents complained about the smell.
13
Maintenance frequency is tailored to the asset type and tendency for the assets to clog or accumulate litter.
12
127 new tree pits built recently in Stonnington. All built in very small spaces.
13
Lastly Lan is from Stonnington and talking about monitoring and maintenance of WSUD assets
12
Chris says don't overload the catchment that flows into the tree.
11
Median strips with no kerb work very very well. Very low maintenance
12
Passively watered trees can absorb between 2% and 70% of available water / runoff. Older trees have higher demand for water.

Now Chis Szota, also Uni Melbourne and Waterways Research Group

The future of Melbourne is bleak due to this loss of open space and trees. And people will die
16
ACT are seeing a decline in canopy cover. Meant to be a pin up city!
14
Total value of carbon from all urban trees in Melbourne is between $30 million and $90 million, depending on what price of carbon you use. And remember we prune them due to overhead power lines.
18
30% is our common agreed target for canopy But no local government has this. We have no urban forest! Maybe we have urban woodlands
9
Now Greg Moore from @UniMelb - bit of a rock star in the world of trees and green infrastructure
12
Misting good at reducing thermal comfort, even if not reducing air temperature
9
Misting another method to cool people. Spray water on to people, or near people. Provides between 4 degrees and 10 degrees.
