in the rarer extreme, governments may use permission to oppress, censor, or surveil their citizens. they can seize assets, revoke access, censor online content, or collect our data en masse. simply put, our permission is always subject to the bias of whoever controls it.

governments ultimately control our permission in trust-based systems today. companies have to comply with government regulations or requests from law enforcement, and can only exist if the government lets them.

online, we rely on a handful of companies for access to the social media, streaming services, online games, etc. they decide what we can see, what we can publish, and which creators can profit from their content.

we rely on banks, payment providers, lenders, or brokers to not tamper with our access to our money. they can block certain transactions, freeze our account, or even close it without providing a warning, notice, or reason.
