🇵🇾 This “RIOTS IN PARAGUAY” video is sensationalist clickbait. Protesters running down a street doesn’t make it a riot. Last night, we said the Paraguayan government had bought peace by announcing measures to return money to Ueno depositors. Someone replied, “And they bought peace. Doesn’t that alarm you?” Isn’t a peaceful resolution preferable to unrest or violence? Peace must never mean buying silence or avoiding accountability. Some are using the Ueno crisis to call for the president’s removal and nationalisation of the banking system. That’s not the same as ordinary Paraguayans demanding their savings back. And I hate politics. It’s a dirty business, often controlled by a handful of powerful people. But society needs structure and leadership. Remove those without a credible replacement, and you risk uncertainty and disorder. Some of this rhetoric reminds me of revolutionary idealism in university lecture halls. Plenty of enthusiasm for tearing down institutions, but little thought for families who must live with the consequences. I understand that some genuinely believe a new government would bring a fairer society. But I worry they’re missing the forest for the trees. I am not dismissing the suffering of those affected by the Ueno Bank collapse. Not for a moment. These are ordinary people, families, pensioners and hardworking Paraguayans whose savings are caught up in a crisis they did not create. For many, this isn’t about politics. It’s the money they depend on to live. They deserve answers, their money back and justice. A resolution process is underway, and that is a positive step, regardless of what led us here. The serious questions of negligence, corruption and responsibility must be investigated and ultimately settled through the courts. Nobody should be above the law. But history has taught us that removing a government is often much easier than dealing with what comes afterwards. And that is where we need to take a breath, about Paraguay. As an outsider who has lived in and observed different parts of the world, I see something here that I believe many people underestimate. Paraguay is, in many respects, a little Garden of Eden. Already. We have peace. We have freedom. Families can raise their children, people can build businesses, enjoy their weekends, sit around a table with friends and live without the constant fear of war, or violence. Is Paraguay perfect? Absolutely not. There is corruption, poverty, inequality and plenty that needs fixing. But those problems should not blind us to what this country already has. And we must never confuse demanding accountability with believing that tearing down the political establishment will automatically produce something better. I am not defending anyone’s wrongdoing. Quite the opposite. Justice matters. Accountability matters. And peaceful protest is a legitimate part of any democracy. But stability matters too. We have a saying: You don’t know what you have, until it’s gone... Throughout history, ordinary people have championed dramatic changes believing that a better future was waiting on the other side. Sometimes they were right. Other times, they discovered that the consequences were far worse than they ever imagined. Iraq is one very good example. US, Canada, UK and Australia are others. And it is ordinary families, not those playing political games, who often pay the highest price. My concern is not about protecting a political party or an individual. It is about protecting Paraguay and the things that make this country worth living in. Christian values, Conservativ politics, Family First and Freedom of choice. There is a world of difference between repairing what is broken and destroying what is still good. And when the consequences of political upheaval finally arrive, they rarely come wrapped in ribbons and bows.
