I am super excited to be speaking at @gophers_africa 2024 as this is a crucial topic for anyone managing large data workloads.
Looking forward to sharing insights and learning from the amazing community at #gca24.
See you in Nairobi!

I'm still not over the BTCPay Server hacks from August. And I don't think I ever will be.
Nine years of coding, building community and creating value with others, only for a lot of that value to be stolen by thieves and AI hackers.
When I look back, the only thing I feel good about is how fast our community reacted, and how many more people were saved from catastrophic losses.
As a FOSS project, we responded better than governments, big corporations and most for-profit companies did. Everyone who contributed should feel proud of the part they played in the response.
What remains is the realization that we are in a new era. The people who robbed us only managed it because they got access to frontier AI models faster than we did. AI has fundamentally changed software development.
So our job now is to build better ways for humans to work with AI while it writes the code.
Developers were already being tortured. The boss wants it yesterday. Sales sold it last week. Product changed it this morning. Everyone in the company wants it faster, and the end users want it perfect. Your backlog has a backlog.
Now add attackers running frontier models that read your entire codebase overnight. It's literally impossible to keep up.
If you're still coding by hand, you're bringing a keyboard to a drone fight. You will not make it.
In this brave new world it's all about having AI running your development and defense, ensuring it's as close to frontier as possible.
And that you are connected with other humans who share your morals. Those who will not only refuse to steal from others, but actively fight thiefs, sharing lessons they learned.
A world where those who create value get to keep it. That's the only world I want to live in.

🙏 THANK YOU!
#GopherConAfrica2026 is a wrap.
To our sponsors and partners: @Google, @moniepoint, @Tailscale, @ardanlabs, @jetbrains, @GolangBridge and, @monoscope_tech, thank you for making it possible. To every attendee, speaker, and volunteer, thank you for showing up
Day 2 recap.
@WWGAfrica fireside chat was the highlight. @Shaki1Nannyombi from Uganda, @itsberyl from Kenya, @_RulesPlayer moderating. Last year it was a handful of us. This year the group filled the frame.
@iamkaroko: 350 TPS to 1,000,000 by removing work from the hot path.
@t_starkx : sagas with Temporal, compensation registered first.
Toluwase: synctest, testing a 10 minute delay without waiting 10 minutes.
@alextrending : a good lock is a policy, not just a loop.
ESHU: standardize the path to production, not how every team writes code.

“Not every user has stable internet.
@_blaqJerom's talk on designing for disconnection was a reminder that the best systems don’t just handle network failures, they’re built to expect them.

Day 1 done @gophers_africa.
Social media, media team coordination, lunch for everyone, and merch table duty. The unglamorous work that keeps a conference running.
Tomorrow is stacked:
- Opening keynote
- 1M transactions in under a second
- Women Who Go Fireside Chats 💃💃💃

THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT POST YOU'LL READ TODAY.
This week, someone lost $6.6 Million in Ledger wallet drain.
He bought the dip, didn't panic sell, and then one wallet switch cost him all 80 $BTC.
Most drainers need your wallet to be online or need you to sign something you didn't read.
So here's how to set up a wallet on a spare iPhone that goes online once and never again.
1. Buy a new, sealed iPhone
The cheapest model works. Buy it from a store, never secondhand. A used phone could be tampered with before it reaches you.
2. Make a new Apple ID
Use it only on this phone. If your main Apple ID ever gets hacked, this phone stays out of it.
3. Turn off Face ID and Touch ID
Use a long passcode with letters and numbers. Face ID can be unlocked by holding the phone up to your face, even against your will.
A 6-digit code can be cracked in about a day. A 10+ character one would take thousands of years.
4. Turn on Lockdown Mode
Settings > Privacy & Security > Lockdown Mode. It switches off the features spyware usually uses to break in.
Also, in your passcode settings, keep USB accessories switched off. That stops the charging port from passing data while the phone is locked.
5. Download the wallet app
On your home WiFi, download an offline wallet app that signs with QR codes. Pick one that's open source. This is the last time the phone goes online.
6. Cut every connection
Remove the SIM and delete any eSIM. Turn on Airplane Mode. Turn off WiFi and Bluetooth. Leave it like this forever.
7. Create your wallet
Write the 24 words on paper or steel. Never take a photo of them, and never type them anywhere.
If the phone dies, those words are how you get your coins back.
8. Move coins with QR codes
On your normal phone, install that wallet's watch-only companion app. It can see your balance but can't spend anything.
To send coins, it shows a QR code. Scan it with the offline iPhone, check the details, and approve. The iPhone shows a QR back. Scan that with your normal phone, and the transaction goes out.
Your keys never leave the offline phone.
9. Store it switched off
Turn it fully off before putting it away. A switched-off iPhone is much harder to break into.
Every few months, charge it to about 50%. A battery left dead for years can get ruined.
It takes one afternoon. After that, your keys never touch the internet again.
Save this for later.

My son is smart. I confirmed it again yesterday when reading a book to them on the first black woman astronaut Mae Jemison. He said, “She is also the first Jemison, right?” I didn't know where he was going. Then he said, everyone can be first at something if you divide people 🤯

I did an ideation session with Claude a couple of months ago. A lot of what it suggested was crap; it was recursive, and I picked holes in it until it gave up. I went to Gemini; it brought up suggestions I hadn't even considered, but it didn't go further as it was limited by training data.
It then occurred to me that AI is good for seeing whether others have had similar thought processes in the past and for understanding the boundaries of previous thinking before pushing further.
AI is excellent for research before creative output. Anyone who thinks it creates new things is either severely limited in their experience or very lazy. The human mind is still more powerful than the best AI. The way we make associations over time and space to create new concepts and ideas is unparalleled.
AI is a powerful helper, no doubt, but we must not give up human agency and creativity to laziness and expedience.
