The responsibility of a scientist goes way beyond checking that your citations are real. It demands that you care about the value and integrity of our collective product. And it is telling that the loudest people demanding we care about citations have done nothing to deal with the deep and chronic issues that plague publishing.

It's been a couple of years now since I finished my PhD... and looking back, honestly most of the things I learned had little to do with neuroscience. I list a few of them in my latest blog post celefthe.com/blog/2026/a-phd… which, much like my PhD, took way too long to write up

What is sample size in neuroscience? And what happens when we get it wrong? Our article in @MolecularAutism explores the prevalence of pseudoreplication, a form of statistical error which occurs when we get this wrong, in the FXS and NDD literature. edin.ac/3ZYkpdI 🧵

Pseudoreplication is not inevitable. Statistical tools such as linear mixed models allow us to take within- and between-animal variability into account. Hierarchical bootstraps are also another option (and a personal favourite!)

A statistical error known as pseudoreplication appears in more than half of recent mouse studies on neurological disorders, according to a new study. Peter Kind and Constantino Elfetheriou tell Lauren Schenkman why researchers should pay attention. thetransmitter.org/pseudorep…
