Interesting to see the level of vitriol against Cebuanos and Bisaya speakers when all they ask is for people to try to speak a bit of their language when one goes to visit their provinces or regions, where if you can’t then they ask for folks to use English. Both Filipino and English are Philippine national languages. As a frequent traveler both in the Philippines and in foreign countries, I always try to learn basic sentences or words to get me through the place I’m visiting. I don’t go to a place expecting locals to adjust to my lack of local language skills. Where I have reached my limit, I use Google translate. Tip: it’s very helpful when you’re in Japan. But I digress, I wonder why it’s considered such a sin for Cebuanos or Bisayans to ask visitors to know a little bit of their language, and if not default to English. There’s a whole study that could be done there about privilege, prejudice, and entitlement. I’ve also noticed that many resort to name-calling over actually providing a decent argument. Fascinating.
