Kenya’s banking industry has launched the Banking Industry Sustainable Finance Roadmap, a strategic framework to guide financial institutions in scaling sustainable finance, strengthening climate and nature risk management, improving sustainability disclosures and directing capital towards investments that support inclusive and sustainable economic growth.
Developed through KBA Centre for Sustainable Finance and Enterprise Development (CSFED), in partnership with IFC - International Finance Corporation) and WWF-Kenya, the Roadmap provides an industry-wide framework for integrating sustainability into governance, risk management, lending, reporting and capital allocation.
Speaking at the launch, @NETFUNDkenya CEO Samson Toniok, representing Principal Secretary for Environment, Climate Change and Forestry Eng. Festus Ngeno, emphasised the importance of environmental protection in economic planning and the need for stronger collaboration between government, financial institutions, businesses and development partners to mobilise capital for sustainable investments.
Kenya Bankers Association Chairman and KCB Bank Group CEO Paul Russo said the Roadmap provides an opportunity to move the industry from sustainability commitments to practical implementation, guiding financial institutions in financing green projects and managing climate and nature-related risks.
KBA CEO Raimond Molenje noted that the framework brings together ongoing industry initiatives and provides clearer direction for integrating sustainability into financial institutions' governance, risk management, reporting and capital allocation.
IFC Regional Director for Eastern Africa Mary Porter Peschka reaffirmed IFC's commitment to supporting Kenya's financial sector in strengthening climate and nature risk management, improving disclosures and mobilising capital for sustainable development.
@WWF_Kenya CEO Jackson Kiplagat highlighted the importance of moving from policy commitments to measurable institutional action, including developing Nature Transition Plans to align financial decisions with environmental sustainability.
The launch took place during the Banking Industry Sustainable Finance Summit 2026, which brought together banking leaders, investors, development partners, regulators and policymakers to discuss the future of sustainable finance in Kenya.

Today, as we mark International Day for Biodiversity, through our Centre for Sustainable Finance and Enterprise Development (CSFED), we have partnered with @WWF_Kenya to restore 56,000 mangroves across six hectares in Kilifi County.
The initiative aims to strengthen coastal climate resilience and advance nature-based solutions for climate adaptation.
The restoration activities are taking place in Mtwapa, Takaungu, and Kilifi Creek, with participation from @AbsaKenya, @KeEquityBank , @DTBKenya @AccessBankKenya @KCBInKenya @NCBABankKenya @gtbank Victoria Commercial Bank, and @Postbank_kenya in the mangrove planting exercise.
This initiative aligns with Kenya’s National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan, the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, and the Government of Kenya’s 15 Billion Tree Growing Programme.

Today marks a defining moment in our journey toward a climate-resilient and sustainable future, reflecting our shared commitment to bold, innovative solutions that will secure long-term prosperity for our country. I officially opened the workshop on the establishment of Kenya’s Green Investment Bank in Naivasha. This is a timely and strategic initiative informed by the reality that current climate financing mechanisms have not kept pace with the scale and urgency of our mitigation and adaptation needs.
For too long, climate finance has disproportionately focused on mitigation, leaving adaptation a critical priority for countries like Kenya underfunded. The Green Investment Bank will address this imbalance by delivering targeted, innovative, and sustainable financing that supports both priorities. I am encouraged by global best practices that demonstrate the catalytic role of the private sector in mobilizing long-term capital. With strong policy frameworks already in place, this engagement brings together government, development partners, and private sector actors to build a robust and resilient climate finance ecosystem.
As we move forward, our focus will be on investing where commercial capital is limited, de-risking projects to attract private investment, and ensuring a deliberate balance between mitigation and adaptation. The Bank will be anchored on blended finance, strong governance, transparency, and long-term financial sustainability.
I remain committed to advancing a credible financing mechanism to support Kenya’s Nationally Determined Contributions while addressing both national and community-level priorities. Together, we will position the Kenya Green Investment Bank as a model for Africa and a source of pride for our nation.
