Ishmael Butler on feeling left behind as rap tastes shifted and Digable Planets broke up, and the creative metamorphosis that led to him starting the Shabazz Palaces project, which led to a Sub Pop deal and a career renaissance.
Spoke with @REALDJPREMIER for a @waxpoetics cover story a few years back on Gang Starr’s masterpiece Hard To Earn. Recently republished on their site with full historical shots from @dannyhastings. Shouts to @monkuno. Available now for those who didn’t grab the physical

"Murder Is" is the new single/video from @likemadd's upcoming Backwoodz debut, Nonechosen. The album drops on 11/6, and can be pre-ordered directly from us. Speaking of which, Nonechosen t-shirts are now available via pre-order as well. We are now almost a week away from release, and this feels like the culmination of so much of what Backwoodz is about.
Mike's roots in this game run as deep as anyone out there, but his style and approach are so unique and so in tune with this moment we are collectively living in (and hopefully through). This also feels like as good a time as any to announce that Mike Ladd will be joining Armand Hammer for their NYC show on November 15th at Brooklyn's Music Hall of Williamsburg, along with Sideshow, Kenny Segal, DJ Haram & Sha Ray, and Curly Castro. This will be Ladd's first solo NYC performance in *checks notes* a loooooong time, and we know him well enough to know he is going to bring it. Please believe us when we say you should grab tickets before they sell out!

There Was A Time is a James Brown song. Michael went crazy with this one. I can’t even imagine seeing this in real time, i wouldn’t have believed my own eyes and ears

For the 6 people I actually interact on this timeline, I got new album out called 'someday, but not today'
The Metro wrote some flattering words about it. Perhaps you should consider tapping in:

On the new Truth Hurts, we spoke to Ishmael Butler about everything from his Seattle roots to the Shabazz Palaces reinvention, his ‘94 Grammys speech after Digable Planets won for “Rebirth of Slick (Cool Like Dat),” meeting Herbie Hancock, making "Blowout Comb," and his new masterpiece, "It’s a Style Sport."
Plus, tales of playing college hoops for John Calipari, interning at Arthur Russell’s Sleeping Bag Records, collaborating with his son Lil Tracy, and the genius of Octavia Butler and Moby-Dick.

McCartney states Prince covered the "The Long and Winding Road" from the 1970 album Let It Be
He covered it multiple times live, rehearsal & oneof those DAT tapes from a live recording leaked recently
Heres one of the variants, live:

Je ne m'en lasse pas de cette première rencontre en mai 1965 à l'hôtel Savoy de Londres entre un jeune Donovan de 19 ans intimidé et un Dylan curieux qui reprend vite la main sur ce "duel" improvisé par la presse avec "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue".

This tribute from Ice Cube to D.O.C., right before the latter received his Paid in Full Award this weekend, was one of the most powerful things I've heard in a long time.

Death Row co-founder Dick Griffey once called the D.O.C. "probably the single most influential person in gangsta rap."
I spoke to the West Coast legend about growing up in West Dallas, writing "We Want Eazy" in 20 minutes, the crash that stole his voice, the secret origins of Death Row, piecing together "Nuthin' but a 'G' Thang" with Snoop, trading insults with ’Pac in Atlanta, and receiving a Hip Hop Grandmaster Award this weekend from the Paid in Full Foundation.
