Now, regarding William’s perspective on racism, here’s where I stand. I understand where he’s coming from. There’s a mentality I’ve carried throughout my own life where I refuse to allow racism, bigotry, or systemic obstacles to dictate what I can accomplish. I’ve had to develop that mentality to survive, pursue my ambitions, and become the man I am today. But having an undefeatable mindset does NOT mean the obstacles themselves cease to exist. I cannot pretend racism disappears simply because I refuse to let it defeat me. I cannot dismiss the experiences of other Black people who may be facing circumstances far worse than mine. And I cannot expect everybody to overcome those obstacles using the exact same mentality I developed. That’s something I’ve had to learn myself. When I spoke with William about my experiences skiing, including concerns surrounding sundown towns and racial barriers in spaces where Black people are underrepresented, I believe he began to understand the distinction. And THAT is what a productive conversation can accomplish. He’s 19 YEARS OLD. He’s trying to figure out how to navigate a world where racism exists without allowing the fear of it to consume his ambitions. Is his approach completely developed? No. Could his words come across as dismissive toward other Black people’s experiences? Absolutely. But is that automatically evidence that he’s some malicious, irredeemable individual? HELL NO. And that’s where I have a problem with some of y’all. You preach self-education, accountability, inclusivity, and community. But the MOMENT somebody demonstrates a gap in their understanding, some of you would rather turn them into the community’s next punching bag than pull them aside and have a meaningful conversation. And the irony is absolutely ridiculous. Some of y’all literally LARP as DEMONS, NEPHILIM, and supernatural entities, yet somehow have the audacity to treat imperfect human beings like they’re beyond redemption. I’m not saying your experiences with discrimination aren’t valid. I’m not saying anybody owes unlimited patience to someone who repeatedly disrespects them. And I’m DEFINITELY not saying people shouldn’t be held accountable for what they say. But accountability without any room for education, reflection, or rehabilitation eventually becomes punishment for the sake of punishment. And I think the VTuber community needs to have a serious conversation about how it treats young Black men. Because mentorship is something we desperately need more of, especially in spaces where we’re already underrepresented. Not every young man is going to enter adulthood with a perfectly developed understanding of racism, sexism, sexuality, identity, or social dynamics. Some are going to say ignorant shit. Some are going to struggle to communicate. Some are going to develop defensive mentalities because they’re genuinely afraid of what the world has waiting for them. That doesn’t mean we excuse everything. It means we learn to distinguish somebody who needs guidance from somebody who deliberately wants to cause harm. And with Election Day here, I understand political tensions are high. People are frustrated, scared, and exhausted by the climate we’re living in. But that frustration cannot become an excuse to abandon compassion or critical thinking. I’m stepping in because I recognize a young man who could benefit from the same kind of guidance I was fortunate enough to receive. Not because I agree with everything he’s said. Not because I think he’s above criticism. But because I’d rather help a 19-year-old develop into a better man than watch grown adults compete to see who can publicly destroy him first. If we genuinely want a better community, we have to be willing to BUILD better people. You cannot keep preaching growth while treating everybody’s growing pains like a permanent character flaw. And some of y’all need to learn that distinction yourselves.
