Ralph Baric and Ian Lipkin in the NYT raising the alarm on a new Cell paper where Wuhan Institute of Virology scientists experiment on ANOTHER coronavirus that can infect humans under grossly inadequate biosafety precautions. “could have significant risks for people worldwide.”

I love @paperpile, but it really needs an option to destructively remove all its links in a google doc #academicwriting

I just released version 0.9.7 of the #clustermq #rstats package: mschubert.github.io/clusterm… _Run your code on HPC or via SSH via one line of code_ Please check it out; feedback is welcome!

New paper out! 🚨🥳 We thought that passenger gene amplifications can drive cancer vulnerabilities and show that RBM14 does so via cGAS-STING modulation 👇 @veronica_rendo @BenDavidLab @RameenBeroukhim @Foijer_lab

I remain of the view that the disengagement of academics from this forum was a hugely self-defeating gesture. It scuttled what had been an unprecedented resource for academic communication and a valuable platform for public outreach.
There are now papers showing that the migration of academic communities from Twitter to other social media sites mostly failed. But they never fully returned to Twitter either. I wonder if we will ever see so many different communities interacting in the same online space again.

"Quitting science", as if industrial research doesn't exist and/or there is shame in putting your *very* expensive degree to work in high level tech support, consultation, contract research, tutoring, entrepreneurship, etc, etc. Weird culty language to say leaving academia, tbh

Our Review on “Aneuploidy as a driver of human cancer” is out in Nature Genetics. Check it out! 🎉 The Ben-David lab wishes everyone Shana Tova — may the new year be much better than the ending one, bringing peace and stability to all! 🙏 nature.com/articles/s41588-0…

It's great to see my first paper of the PhD published in @NatureBiotech! go.nature.com/47ARizC. This describes our scRNA-seq method, scITD, for analyzing how the transcriptional states of multiple cell types are linked across patients. A few highlights from the paper:

Can cells adapt to aneuploidy? Our new study reveals that reducing chromosomal instability and inflammation is key to adaptation. Thanks for everyone that contributed! @_ms03 @marsotordlt @JonneRaaij @MedemaRene embopress.org/doi/full/10.10…

Do Americans realize how much damage this whole "science is not neutral so we might as well use it for activism" thing does?

Interesting angle
Over a 4-year cycle, the Olympic Committee gives out more medals (~3200) than Nature publishes papers (~2400)

When dealing with a complex problem with many unknowns, humility is key. If you think you know what you're doing, you probably don't know what you're doing. Be aware of your own biases & weaknesses, and hedge your potential mistakes. Don't be fooled by confidence -- it's often a mask for ignorance.

Premature abstraction is WAY more prevalent and worse than premature optimization and really handcuffs code bases for years and years.

Attention grant reviewers: power analysis is an exercise in box ticking that we can all do without.
Prospective power analysis is hilarious because your replace an arbitrary guess of sample size with an arbitrary guess of the effect size you’ve yet to measure, do a touch of arithmetic, and suddenly it’s considered rigorous

I've always found that the majority of people in the top 1% of whatever they were doing were always the most kind, helpful, and relaxed. The people who were in the middle were the complete opposite.

Current approach: Google + @paperpile + convert vector into png for embedding #acadamicwriting
Replying to @johanneskoester
Typst looks great under the hood, but they already now introduced very basic features as paid. Also, their syntax uses even more cryptic letters than latex does. Google docs not support the most basic things like SVG figures or captions. Am I missing something? (2/n)
