📹 His hand knew the truth about Allāh 🎙 Shaykh ʿAbdur-Razzāq al-Badr (may Allāh preserve him) from Madinah, lecturer in the Two Sacred Mosques of Makkah & Madinah [1] The Messenger of Allāh pointing towards the heavens indicating that Allāh is above them Jābir ibn ʿAbdillāh (may Allāh be pleased with him), while describing the sermon of the Messenger of Allāh (ﷺ) on the Day of ʿArafah, said: “The people said: ‘We bear witness that you have conveyed the message, fulfilled your duty, and given sincere counsel.’ Then the Prophet (ﷺ) raised his index finger towards the heaven and pointed it towards the people, saying: ‘O Allāh, bear witness! O Allāh, bear witness!’ three times.” قَالُوا: نَشْهَدُ أَنَّكَ قَدْ بَلَّغْتَ وَأَدَّيْتَ وَنَصَحْتَ، فَقَالَ: بِإِصْبَعِهِ السَّبَّابَةِ يَرْفَعُهَا إِلَى السَّمَاءِ وَيَنْكُتُهَا إِلَى النَّاسِ: «اللهُمَّ اشْهَدْ، اللهُمَّ اشْهَدْ» ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ Source: Muslim (1218) [2] The belief of the the Salaf in opposition to the Jahmiyyah ʿAbdullāh ibn al-Mubārak (d. 181 AH) was asked: “How should we know our Lord, the Almighty and Majestic?” He replied: “Above the seventh heaven, above His Throne. And we do not say as the Jahmiyyah say, that He is here on earth (i.e., everywhere).” سَألْتُ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ المُبارَكِ كَيْفَ يَنْبَغِي لَنا أنْ نَعْرِفَ رَبَّنا عز وجل؟ قالَ: عَلى السَّماءِ السّابِعَةِ عَلى عَرْشِهِ، ولا نَقُولُ كَما تَقُولُ الجَهْمِيَّةُ إنَّهُ هاهُنا فِي الأرْضِ Sources: ʿAbdullāh ibn Aḥmad in as-Sunnah (22); Ibn Baṭṭah in al-Ibānah (7/155); al-Bukhārī in Khalq Afʿāl al-ʿIbād (p. 13) [3] The universal recognition that Allāh is above the creation Ibn Kullāb (d. approximately 240 AH), the founder of the Kullābiyyah school of theology, which preceded and influenced early Ashʿarī theology, said: “You will not ask anyone among the people — whether Arab or non-Arab, believer or disbeliever — ‘Where is your Lord?’ except that he will say: ‘Above the heaven.’ He will either [1] express this clearly in words, [2] gesture with his hand, [3] or indicate it with his eyes if he is unable to speak clearly. He will not point to anything else, not to the earth, a plain or a mountain. Nor have we seen anyone who supplicates to Him without raising his hands towards the heaven. And we have not found anyone, apart from the Jahmiyyah, who, when asked about his Lord, says: ‘He is in every place,’ as they do.” لَا تَسْأَلُ أَحَدًا مِنْ النَّاسِ عَنْهُ عَرَبِيًّا وَلَا عَجَمِيًّا وَلَا مُؤْمِنًا وَلَا كَافِرًا فَتَقُولُ: أَيْنَ رَبُّك؟ إلَّا قَالَ فِي السَّمَاءِ. إنْ أَفْصَحَ أَوْ أَوْمَأَ بِيَدِهِ أَوْ أَشَارَ بِطَرْفِهِ - إنْ كَانَ لَا يُفْصِحُ؛ وَلَا يُشِيرُ إلَى غَيْرِ ذَلِكَ مِنْ أَرْضٍ وَلَا سَهْلٍ وَلَا جَبَلٍ. وَلَا رَأَيْنَا أَحَدًا إذَا دَعَاهُ إلَّا رَافِعًا يَدَهُ إلَى السَّمَاءِ وَلَا وَجَدْنَا أَحَدًا غَيْرَ الْجَهْمِيَّة يُسْأَلُ عَنْ رَبِّهِ فَيَقُولُ: فِي كُلِّ مَكَانٍ كَمَا يَقُولُونَ Source: Ibn Taymiyyah in several books (Majmūʿ al-Fatāwā (5/320) etc.), Ibn al-Qayyim in Ijtimāʿ al-Juyūsh al-Islāmiyyah (1/283–284).
