Back to João Rodrigues “Tçuzu”, the Jesuit who sent his readers “to the koyomi of Japan”. A nanban byōbu of around 1600 shows the people he lived among at Nagasaki: Jesuits in black cassocks, Japanese onlookers, the bustle of the Portuguese trade.

Prepping a talk for Beijing, I spent the morning with these—Japanese printed almanacs (koyomi) from the Bunsei years, 1819–21, from an Edo publisher. Every day gets its planet, its sexagenary name, its lucky and unlucky notes. A whole way of ordering time on one folded sheet.

I keep coming back to João Rodrigues, the Jesuit who wrote the first grammar of Japanese at Nagasaki (1604) and closed it with a treatise on Japanese time. When he needed the small calendar detail, he sent his reader “to the koyomi of Japan.” Sheets like these are what he meant.

I'll be talking about Rodrigues next week in Beijing. But more on this soon #HistSci #histSTM #koyomi #calendar #timekeeping

#UdeALaCasaDeTodos

In c. 1510, Andrés de Li's Reportorio de los tiempos explained the autumn equinox with a pair of scales: Libra, holding twelve ounces like the twelve months of the year. But for Li the Sun entered Libra on 14 September, not the 22nd. The calendar was drifting. #histsci #almanacs

Today is the equinox. For Andrés de Li it fell on 14 September, when the Sun entered Libra and made the days equal to the nights. A few days apart from ours, and a calendar reform still to come. #histsci #almanacs ⚖️

The Old English word for equinox is 'emniht', from 'efen' and 'niht', when night and day are evenly balanced. Today is the 'hærfestlice emniht', autumnal equinox; after this (says Byrhtferth of Ramsey) 'langað seo niht and wanað se dæg', 'the night lengthens and the day wanes'.
