I posted this in a rush before a halloween party, came out a bit more hot takey than I meant :)
Caveats to doing the "resume from log" trick:
- Opus 5.5 is so much better at "sipping" from files and may be required for this to pay off
- I have several skills that explain the Claude Code log structure so it doesn't have to rediscover it.
- I already have it use git, plans, and memories, it "externalizes" a lot and not much is only present in-context. This removes lots of "unknown unknowns".
- I didn't benchmark this AT ALL, not even a little bit.
- I capped the context at 400k to save money
- Yes the costs of re-gathering info are "spread" in the following work. I like it better this way tbh.
Basically you already want the context content to be "ephemeral", and once you're there, spending a lot to compact it hasn't been worth it for me.
It turns out, Claude Mods allow replacing compaction entirely so I replaced it with "Resume seamlessly from your log at <path.jsonl>", and it works great :)
It could be that Compaction as a whole was a bit of a collective hallucination of the field.
Give this guide to Claude to set it up: gist.github.com/Tomcc/b7b0f3…

I'm kinda puzzled that everyone insists on "compaction" being a thing for coding agents. Sessions are files, agents are great at reading files, pre-summarizing them is a huge waste of time and tokens.
And worse, it's very "anti bitter lesson", it tries to emulate how a human with lossy memory would work.
I just told my Claude to ignore the compaction (I can't turn it off) and read its own session after it happens:
Obligatory “oh wow it’s doin numbers” reply: check my AI game built on its own 3D agentic harness, robotopia.gg.

I prototyped a bit of a Mii-style robot creator for Robotopia, the pieces were always there but this will let you talk with robots outside the game, even on phones! I'm pretty hyped about it, it's a lot more like Character AI etc.
I rolled out an embeddings cache for our NPCs and made the median embedding request 2x faster. It's not much but it's honest work!
Plus I like it when AI reply lag gets measured in milliseconds :)
These aren't nuke plans, they are peak "placing mugs on a table" performance
(We asked Claude to design a tool it could use to place props on furniture and it went way too hard)

IMO it's pretty awesome that games are getting reverse engineered left and right, so I thought we should make Robotopia even easier to mod.
We added a cli so any agent can edit your scene's JSON, eg. make any scene you want.
The editor is fully multiplayer like a Google Doc, so you can actually look around and watch Claude place stuff as it goes!
Today's slop! What if someone was still making F-Zero, and they recognized that Silence from F-Zero X is the most radical track in any racing game?
I reimagined it as a Mobius strip *around* the moon, close enough to dodge mountains and such
So I cloned that one meme disk tree app, and vibe-polished it into my favorite Disk Tree app for Mac so far. I wish I had this in the last 10 years!
It tries to sort of follow Mac OS design guidelines, it's fast, it finds big files. Enjoy!

Sometimes slopping up a game can answer deep questions like, "what if the snake in Snake was a plane around the Earth and also could jump?".
I made this in a couple days a few months ago, but it turns out it's fun tbh! Maybe I should continue it 🤔
