does it lose power, though?
During a discussion during cruise today, my First Officer raised an insightful technical point regarding the Flydubai incident that I think got overlooked: the counterintuitive advantage of manual reversion.
In simulator training, pilots dread dual hydraulic failure. Without hydraulic assistance, the Boeing 737 reverts to mechanical cables and tabs. Control forces become extremely heavy, and aerodynamic response is sluggish—much like driving a heavy vehicle without power steering.
Yet, in this scenario, that sluggishness likely saved the airframe.
With both engines cut and hydraulic pressure lost, pulling back on the yoke required massive physical effort to achieve even marginal control surface deflection. When the untrained plumber hauled back on the controls, the aerodynamic response was dampened enough to arrest the steep dive without generating catastrophic G-forces.
Had hydraulic systems remained fully powered, an abrupt, panicked pull on the yoke could have easily overstressed the airframe, risking structural breakup.
Paradoxically, the engine shutdown that threatened the flight also enforced the mechanical damping needed to survive the recovery.
Food for thought 💭

I assumed this was satire. The notion that the chair of @AmnestyUK, one of the most institutionally antisemitic NGOs in the world, would resign over Green antisemitism is genuinely LOL.

Senior British officials have made it clear to Israel that if the British Consulate in East Jerusalem is closed and British diplomats are expelled, the United Kingdom will respond by expelling 27 Israeli diplomats, along with their families, from Britain, according to two sources familiar with the matter, as stated in a @Jerusalem_Post .
The consulate is expected to close on October 8, following an order issued by Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar. The move reportedly comes in response to economic sanctions imposed by the United Kingdom on Judea and Samaria.

The Greens lost Amnesty. I repeat: the Greens lost Amnesty.

Worse than Hamas propaganda. I have now seen the documentary NAZA in its entirety, and it is worse than I imagined. Over three years, I’ve tried not to be surprised by ignorance, disinformation, and distortions relating to war, but this is at the top for many reasons.
I will write a detailed analysis soon, but one of the worst, a massive claim displayed in the middle of the film, in bright yellow against a black screen: “Israel has killed more than 73,000 Palestinians in Gaza.”
Not even Hamas says this. Meaning not even Hamas claims Israel has killed every Palestinian that has died in Gaza since October 7th. Hamas has publicly killed Palestinians to maintain power in the Gaza. There have been battles between Hamas and anti-Hamas clans. Up to 20% of the 12,000 Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad rockets fired at Israel fell inside Gaza. Recent Hamas reporting shows natural deaths on their list. To say every person that died in Gaza was killed by Israel is a vulgar lie.
There are a lot of other lies, lies by omission, and lies of ignorance in NAZA, but this claim is unique and follows the lies, damned lies, and statistics for accusations that go against the actual number put out by Hamas or reality.
More to follow on Naza.
Finally, the truth. An anti-Israel Wikipedia editor admits:
"I can honestly say that a good 10-15% of the active accounts since 7 October 2023 have either been my own sockpuppets or other users I have personally and intimately coordinated extensively externally (on sources like Discord) with to ensure the project has a pro-Palestine bias".

PENTAGON CONFIRMS: ALL U.S. B-1 BOMBERS HAVE BEEN PULLED OUT OF RAF FAIRFORD
The Pentagon has now confirmed that every American bomber deployed to RAF Fairford has been returned to its home base in the United States following new intelligence surrounding the suspected terrorist plot against the base.
A Pentagon spokesperson said operational security prevented the U.S. from confirming the movements in real time, but acknowledged Sunday that all U.S. bombers deployed to Fairford had now redeployed to the United States.
According to the NYT, the withdrawal happened at an unusually rapid pace after American commanders received fresh intelligence that dramatically increased the perceived urgency of the threat.
At least 10 B-1 bombers departed Fairford on Sunday, including aircraft that had arrived in Britain less than a week earlier as part of a normal rotation.
The evacuation was reportedly so urgent that some bombers and their crews began departing for the United States while tanker aircraft assigned to support their flights were still being prepared.
U.S. officials said the new intelligence was connected to the same threat warnings that emerged after the suspected plot against RAF Fairford, but that the specificity and urgency of the intelligence increased sharply within the previous 24 hours.
British authorities have been investigating whether individuals involved in the Fairford incident were acting on behalf of a foreign state. An Iranian-linked motive has been considered a leading possibility by investigators, while Iran has denied involvement.
The threat assessment reportedly also includes concern that future attacks could involve drones.
This is what makes the development so striking:
Rapidly evacuating an entire deployed bomber force from a major NATO ally because of a security threat is extraordinarily unusual — especially when the base is hundreds of miles from any active battlefield.
RAF Fairford has played an important role in U.S. operations connected to Iran, and Tehran’s Revolutionary Guards previously warned that bases used for American attacks against Iran could be considered legitimate targets.
Whatever intelligence reached U.S. commanders this weekend, they clearly considered it serious enough not to leave the B-1 fleet at Fairford.
